Just answering the question, I'd say Kimber. But it really depends on what you'll use it for. All of the better companies make fine guns, but they make so many models that you really need to focus on a particular set of models. If it were for defense or carry, I'd go with Para Ordnance and use their double action variant of the 1911.

Im sure the reg. here on the forums are sick of hearing me talk about my 1911s.

But, IMHO I would go Springfield.

I own 2 Kimbers and 6 Springfields. I would take them over my Kimber just about every time. It really depends what model you are looking for in Kimber or Springfield.

My Kimbers are.

1)Custom TLE RL. With rail mount.
2)Custom TLE II. No rail mount.

My Springfeilds are.

1)Combat black stainless.
2)SS campion.
3)SS longslide.
4)operator
5)SS TRP.

Now with that being said. My Kimber TLEs will kick the crap out of my Springfeild campion or my Springfield combat black stainless. But that is lower end springfield VS. higher end KImber.

But, as far as higher end VS. higher end.

My springfield TRP will smoke my Kimber TLEs, on a range or in a TAC. tournament, even out to 30 yards my Springfield TRP will smoke my Kimbers.

But as far as Kimber vs. Springfield in a dollar or dollar range. I think IMHO you get a better gun with Springfield.

Like you can get the Springfield combat black stainless for about $775.00 out the door. A comparable Kimber would be closer to $900.00. And I still think Springfield is a better shooter.

I buried two 1911 colts so far and my 1911 springfield seems to be holding up very well so far.                                    BigBill

I would go with Kimber. The Kimbers seem to have a better fit and finish when compared to the Springfield. The new Kimbers also come with an external extractor which is an improvement I really like. I also believe that Kimber has better customer service if you would ever have to use them. I’ve shot more Kimbers than Springfield and I’ve shot against many Springfields. From what I’ve seen Springfields have more reliability issues. It seems that people have different opinions than these but this is just my experience.

My dealer for the last 5 years moves a lot of 1911 style guns in most every brand including Rock Island, Para, Springfield, Kimber, STI, Colt and a few others. According to him, excluding STI, Kimbers have far less returns to the factory than any other brand he dealt. I cannot remember the exact volume of 1911 style guns he moved but they were staggering. This guy is not just a dealer but an active competition shooter who has experienced and seen all of these guns in action after they have thousands of rounds through them. He ranks production 1911’s in this order: STI, Kimber, Newer Colts, Springfields and Para.

Take Care,
Scott

TScottO has pretty much summed up the pecking order of current 1911s. I think most knowledgeable persons will agree.
STI
Kimber
NRM Colts
Springfield
Para
I'm not too sure that the Dan Wesson shouldn't be in the 5th slot ahead of Para. Don't know where the SIG and S&W 1911s will fit into that group. I haven't had enough input on those to know. Isn't it great to have so many quality 1911s out there to choose from!
