Ideal defense shotgun?
« on: February 18, 2005, 08:54:03 AM »
I was just wondering what would be your ideal defense shotgun and its accessories? Right now I have two Remington 870 Expresses.

One has a 20" Improved choke barrel with rifle-sights with:
1.Factory Synthetic stock with Limbsaver Recoil Pad
2.6 rd. Sidesaddle and 5 rd. shellholder on the stock
3.Remington Factory +2rd. Mag Extension
4.Wilson Side Sling Mount and High Visibility Follower
5.Vang Dome Safety
6.Uncle Mike's 48" Utility Sling

The other has a 21" Vent-ribbed barrel with Modified Remchoke and:
1.Factory Express Stock with a good Factory Recoil Pad
2.4 rd. Sidesaddle and 5 rd. shellholder on stock
3.Choate +3 Mag Extension with Swivel clamp
4.Wilson High Visibility Follower
5.Uncle Mike's 72" Utility Sling

The only mods or extras I want now is some XS Express Sights for my Rifle-sighted one and maybe a 18" barrel for either of them. What's your shotguns equiped with and some suggestions?

I would go with the 18" barrel just for the handling characteristics.  I have a sure-fire forend flashlight grip, a wilson sling (hangs at the ready) and a sidesaddle shell carrier.  Honestly, the surefire is great and the sling is nice (I doubt I would need it in a real defensive situation), but the sidesaddle is worthless.  I have no need to change ammo during a conflict, so it serves me no purpose they just had them on sale a few years ago.  I also have tritium sights on mine (I have an obsession with tritium sights on all of open sighted guns, except for my bushmaster and H&K).

Yeah...I been smacking at the 18.5" barrel for awhile. Anybody wanta trade an 18.5" FACTORY 870 barrel for a 20" Rifle-sighted Improved choke one?

My Remmy 870 isn't perfect, but it serves me well.  Began as an 870 Express, in black park.  Added the folding synthetic 'Ultra-light' PG stock, shortened the barrel to 20 inches (no choke), minimag light underneath, six-round SideSaddle shell carrier, thirteen rounds on the sling in loops, the 8-round extension tube due to the 20" barrel, and bolt-on rifle sights.
Finished off with a camo paint job.
Even with a cylinder bore, it'll put three slugs into 2" at 25 yards.
