Greybeard, as I recall in his previous posts about his Savage 24 had a 'DL' version from the 60's. Those guns had monolithic barrels and were plenty thick enough. After the monolithic barrels went the way of the passenger pigeon, the split barrels were not quite as thick, but still should be plenty thick enough in my opinion. You could go over to
www.savage24.com and ask the boys over there if anyone has done it. Your best bet would be to simply take the gun to a gunsmith who does such work, let him measure the thickness of the barrel, and he'll be able to tell you if it's doable or not, then all the hearsay just doesn't matter.
Sincerely,
Garry
