Can savage 24 22/20ga be threaded for choke tubes?
« on: March 27, 2005, 09:13:42 AM »
I have a 24 that is my main rabbit/squirrel gun.  It's a great gun for small game but if I had a criticism it would be the fixed choke. While the modified choke is a great all around purpose choke It would be nice to have the versatility of different tubes.  Does anyone know if this can be done?

The one I used to own had a barrel plenty thick enough to add screw in tubes.

Greybeard, as I recall in his previous posts about his Savage 24 had a 'DL' version from the 60's. Those guns had monolithic barrels and were plenty thick enough. After the monolithic barrels went the way of the passenger pigeon, the split barrels were not quite as thick, but still should be plenty thick enough in my opinion. You could go over to www.savage24.com and ask the boys over there if anyone has done it. Your best bet would be to simply take the gun to a gunsmith who does such work, let him measure the thickness of the barrel, and he'll be able to tell you if it's doable or not, then all the hearsay just doesn't matter.
Sincerely,

Actually mine is one of the newer models, only a few years old with the sythetic stocks.   The metal does seem reasonably thick.  Just wondered if anyone out there has actually threaded it or know if it can be done.  I do have access to an excellent gunsmith but have enough projects waiting on the shelf just wondered if I could get the quick and easy answer here.
