Barnes Mz Bullets
« on: April 17, 2005, 02:08:03 PM »
Got back to the range yesterday and did not have a single problem with my breech plug. Permatex and backing off of the plug seemed to solve my problem. Thanks for the advice

Shot 8 different bullets with my Omega and got my best results with Barnes 250 and 300 gr. expanders. I was using 110 grains of T7, 25 acp plug conversion. Spit patch between all shots,  4 shot groups.

Groups were 1-1/2 inches, I was very pleased with the results. Other bullets I tried were precision rifle QT and Dead center, ranging from
250 grains to the 360 grain Extreme HP.

I also shot TC shockwave 200 gr. and 295 gr. Powerbelts copper jacketed HP.

Seems my Omega likes tight fitting Sabots, the easier to load bullets opened up to larger groups. All bullets were capable of being used for hunting but the Barnes proved to be the tightest group.

When I get some I am going to try the BM3 and see what results I get with that.

Has anyone had good results hunting with the Barnes expanders? I will be hunting strictly deer, and my shots are usually under 100 yards.

Yes, I killed two bucks last year with the 250 gr; neck shot at 100 yds and a boiler room (top of the heart, major vessels, lungs; buck threw-up - literally) at 174 yds. Disc Elite .50 cal, 120 gr of T7 2f, 250 Mz, Hornady HV Sabot, Winchester 209 primer; both shots were pass throughs.

I harvested a buck with the 300 gr barnes expanders and it did NOT expand!    only 40 yards broadside
The exit hole was the same size as the entrance hole, just a little bigger than a dime!

They were very accurate in my Knight but I will not use them ever again as I am not confident that they will expand like they should.

The Hornady XTP 300 grain expands very well on every deer that I have put one through.

My 2 cents

Did you get the Deer? If so they worked right.  My son got 2 deer with his and both holes were almost the same size in and out. There was a little bigger hole on the exit side. Both deer recovered with in 30 yards.  :D

:D  :D ,,I have tried allmost every muzzleloader bullet out there...Most of them shoot good at 100 yards, BUT,,,,being that most of them are lead, they are somewhat short. THE Barnes bullets are copper, and copper being lighter than lead, are much longer, and i think they fly better at 200 yards.. The lead bullets have a tendiency to start to tumble, pass 100 yards...  The barnes bullets are much harder to load, and i hear people complaning about this,, I try to make the first shot count, and i dont worry about this.... The lead bullets have a chance to come apart.. No chance of this happing with a Barnes bullet,,,..  I believe , and this is my 2 cent worth, there is not a better HUNTING bullet out there for muzzleloaders ,period....If you ever recover a Barnes bullet, very hard to do, you will see that they expand just like the pictures shows....These are the only bullets that i use,,,,

Yes I did get the deer it went 50-60 yards so the bullet did half of its job as these bullets are supposed to expand very much.
I would prefer more expansion from the bullets than I see from the Barnes bullets.... It leaves less doubt.

I have been shooting the Barnes 300gr. in my Remington for years and this bullet is very accurate and very deadly. It expands and produces a wound channel that is unbelievable. Usually the exit hole is only slightly larger than the entrance hole, but the damage on the inside remarkable.
My friends shoot the 250gr and have had the same great success. I have killed deer from 12yds to 110 yds and have had no problems at all. The three of us have never lost a deer with this bullet. Deer don't tote these hits too far.
Barnes will be the first bullet I try in the Encore.

All my hunting guns use Barnes Bullets. The only one I have not switched to Barnes Bullets is my 500 MAG. I like the cast bullets there.  :D
