Paint or Blue the Beercan Mortar ?
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:25:34 PM »
Many of you have seen my mortar in the infancy stages in the thread titled "After I seeing it I had to have one" http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=60965&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

I am still undecided as to blue the thing or paint it black. I'll let you cannon and mortar gurus help me decide.

Post your thoughts here and I will let the majority decide for me. I will post pictures of the completed project.

So get to typing and give me your opinions, like and dislikes. Lets see which finish wins out... :D

Bluing is easier to fix if it gets rusty. That gets my vote!

Paint

Use the no bake paint made by Lauer Custom Weaponry. You can pick from a couple dozen different colors,
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Original Coehorns were bronze, although I do not know if they were left natural, polished or painted.  My guess is that during peacetime, the military need for spit and polish would have kept them shiny but during the diversions of actual warfare, the polishing would have been left for inspections only.  I would paint them bronze or brass colored, not black.

The beds I expect were painted olive drab like most artillery wood work.

Iron Coehorn's were painted black.  Paint is much easier to repair than blue.  Black rustoleum is best use rustoleum primer first.

Paint gets my vote. Easy to fix too. Or, you can go the "Pimp" my cannon route and have it chrome plated.... :-D  Sorry, I couldn't resist....

For authenticity I would paint it black.

I really like the looks of a blued barrel but I would leave that for a smaller barrel.

It's a tough call. I'm a fan of things that take the least possible upkeep.

If done properly, bluing looks really nice and when I made my handgonne, I blued it. However, the downside to bluing is that if it isn't kept oiled, it doesn't really do a whole lot to prevent rust. After messing with it for a while, I ended up painting it black.

Black paint is historically correct for iron (steel) mortars and cannons and is very easy to touch up if necessary. The POR15 that was discussed in another thread looks like really tough stuff. I'm also considering having my King howitzer powder coated a semi-gloss black. Also really tough and very durable.

The bottom line is go with whatever makes you happy.

If I was to do it in paint I would go with the DuraCoat.

Once you put it on its there.

I would order this kit, comes with everything.

http://www.lauerweaponry.com/

DuraCoat has over 20+ colors.

But thats if I was going to do it.
