Cleaning my new omega
« on: April 17, 2005, 06:58:22 PM »
:D Does any one use gunsolvent and gun oil to clean theirs or do you do it with borebutter and in the hotsoapy water ,I heard if you do use reguler boresolvent that the barel will just foul up all the faster, Do you take your scope off if you have the mounts that allow you to, Iknow for some of you these quewstions might seem pretty basic but I want to do the best possible job keeping my riffle in the best condition as I can possibly can. Thanks for any advice it is much appreited. scott :bye: [/img]

The answer sort of depends on what powder you are using. Most of the newer synthetics will clean up pretty well with just water or a mild soap and water. Personally I use a solution of grease cutting soap with fairly hot water and immediately follow up with a coat of Ballistol oil. The Ballistol has been used by the black powder guys for a long time and apparently does not cause any of the problems that regular petroleum oils do with muzzleloaders. If you use a petroleum oil for storage you must use a good solvent to remove the oil prior to shooting. Many use alcohol or a mixture of 91% alcohol (from the RX) and clear windex (from Walmart). The clear windex does not have ammonia like the blue stuff does. Ammonia is not a good thing to put in your barrel. I am presently shooting Black Mag'3 and Goex Pinnacle and these two powders are fairly easy to clean up and will do so without a lot of trouble. If you are shooting Triple Seven it may require a little more attention and possibly the use of a brass brush to be sure to get all the crud out. Also if you are shooting sabots there is a possiblilty that plastic will get left in the bore. A good plastic remover should be used from time to time. I run a few patches with JB bore paste throught the bore from time to time to help clean out any small pieces of fouling that the solvents miss. JB is a type of polish and has to be run up and down the bore several times making full length passes and then cleaned out with your normal cleaning procedure. Again I coat the bore with Ballistol after thorough cleaning to eliminate the chance for rust. I leave the breechplug out when stored in my gun safe. If you are shooting real black the procedure is about the same but requires a little more time with the hot soapy water to be sure to have all the corrosive chemicals out and then just follow the same procedure above. I do not remove the scope from my Omega but I have to be careful to not get it in the cleaning or oiling mess.

Hot soapy water and a good grease cutting detergent (Dawn) is all you need. When you get it clean, rinse it in just about boiling clean water, and it will dry by itself in just a few minutes. I spray some WD-40 on all the metal when it's dry and also on a patch down the bore. Wipe off the excess. Just remember to swab it out before you shoot the next time. My scope sits in Leopold QR mounts, and I remove it before cleaning. Enjoy your new Omega!

I just use vinegar Windex on a patch to clean out fouling. A dry patch followed by a patch with breakfree on it. My scope stays on the gun all the time.  :D

I take the trigger mech off. It's easy to do. Then you can clean it off and oil it.

It is easy to remove the trigger assy if you remember that there are little screws that hold the pins in and they do not want to come out if you forget the screws. I did it once ONCE!!!!! Lucky I quit before I messed up something and then reengaged brain and remembered the screws.

I use only hot water and it's clean in 5-6 patches...I shoot 777.  I only remove the barrel from the stock 2-3 time a year because there is virtually no blowback.
