more hand spring, firing pin and side plate problems
« on: April 28, 2005, 12:12:34 PM »
I used up two guitar strings making hand springs and finally got some good ones for my DW model W12. I discovered, however, that when I cinched the sideplate down good that the lockwork locked up. When I eased up on sideplate screws a half turn, everything was OK. I assumed that the spring I ordered from numrich would take care of the problem.

the spring they sent was the same spring that's in later DW models and wouldn't work without modification. I drilled a 1/32" hole in the hand using as a pattern the hand from later model and installed the spring. Still locks up when sideplate is tightened properly.

I've had the piece for a couple of years and only test fired it when I got it, but I think this was a pre-existing problem that I didn't notice. I suspect previous owner had mixed and matched parts that don't quite fit. The problem with firing it with a loosed sideplate is that eventually I'll probably lose a screw as they shoot loose.

Also a prolem I created myself...while testing lockwork with sideplate off, the firing pin struck when cylinder was not locked up and broke off the firing pin, which should not be too hard to replace.

Maybe this piece should be put out to pasture as just a collector item rather than a shooter.

my suggestion is to send it to someone who will treat it like the jewel it is, (good luck) to have it repaired. It most certainly does not deserve to be "put to pasture). I love mine, and shoot it at least once every couple months. If ya can't find someone you trust locally (where are ya anyway?) then keep posting here .... someone will step up to the plate... if that fails LMK I aint no expert but have not been beaten yet, cause I am not ashamed to ask for "expert" help.... Good luck and keep the faith...   Marty

I'm in Davenport, Iowa. this is NOT DW country, however, so doubt there are smiths interested.

Have you written the support people at Dan Wesson?  I notice their emphasis is currently all on their 1911 clones, but they say new revolvers are still available.  Whether they have any parts for the 12 or not, I have no idea?  You can contact them at service@danwessonfirearms.com.

Regarding your sideplate, clearly something is binding when you tighten it up.  Try puting some high spot blue or simply coloring with a magic marker both the frame side and the sideplate and the hand.  Operate the action as you tighten the screws.  When it starts to catch or rub, cycle it a couple more times, then open up and see where the rub marks are?  This may suggest a solution.
