« on: April 12, 2004, 04:52:34 AM »
I have a Marlin Model 56 short throw lever gun. It's broke somehow or nuther it wont fire ost of the time I think due to headspace problem at the bolt. Anyway I was hoping someone could help me find some parts for it or maybe someone has oen that still works but is shot out and and is willing to sell it. Any helkp or information would be appreciated
Thanks

Charlie,
You mention that you think your problem is headspace. There are two other things that can cause whats happening.Your gun might have a damaged or broken firing pin,or a weak firing pin spring. If you get intermitten shots, its more than likely the spring.Nonetheless, you can probably get the parts you need from  Gun Parts Corp. They are on the web.

Hey Ray

I've been down the fireing pin road a couple times. A new pin doesnt help any. The spring behind the pin is pretty light and the internal hammer seams to be hitting hard enough but it seams to me that it only leaves a light mark on the rim. It's a possibility that the hammer spring might be weak I dont recall changing that. It's been a while since I've worked on it - few years actually.

I'll look into the hammer spring and fireing pin spring - maybe there is something there. But it just seamed to me that the hammer hits pretty good it has one of the strongest springs in the action and a good amount of travel. I'll be tickled if the problem is that simple.

Thanks

Another area to check is the back of the chamber.  If the rifle has been dry fired the firing pin can make a dent there.  Then the rim of the case doesn't have a good backing where the firing pin strikes it and sort of bends out of the way.  Result is intermittant ignition.  I speak from personal experience!

I know this thread is ancient history, but thought I would add my two cents for someone else who might have this problem.  I had a similar problem with the Model 56 that my cousin gave me.  I took it apart and over the years the oil on and surrounding the firing pin had turned to a sticky varnish.  I cleaned the pin and inside the bolt out with mineral spirits, oiled it with fresh oil, and it worked fine after that.
