Helicopter!
« on: January 29, 2005, 08:26:57 AM »
I live in Surprise Arizona, and around here it's hard to find a good spot to hunt. Surprise is located just west of Phoenix. I decided to go out this morning for some coyotes. There is a big plot of state land a few miles out of town so I headed out there at about 0600. I took a winding dirt road to where I usually set up, it was still very dark out at 0630. I parked my vehicle and  started getting ready while listening for any sign of coyotes howling. I was about 3 miles out in the desert against a mountain. Then I saw headlights coming down the same dirt road I just got off of. What? I thought I was deep enough in the desert I wouldn't see anyone today. It turned out to be another hunter, he drove on by. He had a 4-wheel drive and it took him much farther up towards the mountains. I guess that's not too bad, I am more than happy to share with someone who enjoys the great outdoors just like me. I was still standing next to my truck when it happened. I heard what sounded like a helicopter coming fast and low from the west. The helicopter turned out to belong to the Maricopa County Sherrifs Office. The other hunter in his 4-wheel drive was about a mile away at this point. The helicopter turned on his spotlight and circled the 4x4 about 6 times. Then he turned his light off and came straight at me. What did he want? What was he looking for? I was in complete darkness, could he even see me? Of course he could. I had my rifle in my hands, a complete camoflage suit and hat. He then proceded to blast me with his spotlight while hovering over me. This went on for what seemed like 5 minutes. I just stood there looking at him and he just kept shining his light on me standing beside my vehicle. Finally he went on to harass the next hunter. So now it is quiet. Dead silent. No coyotes for miles after that. Why did he have to ruin my Saturday? I sat out there for an hour, gave up and went on home. As soon as I got home I called the Sherrifs office. I was informed that there were several armed illegial immigrants out in the desert with me that morning. The people in the helicopter were just trying to protect me. All of the immigrants were arrested. They police just doing their job.
Go out and get yourself a Concealed Weapons License. I did. :gun4:

Yeah, Right!!  I would bet that if you checked, your "sheriff" is very anti-hunting and pro-gun control.  If I were you I would inform the game dept to report this case of hunter harrassment.  They usually have video cams on the choppers - ask to see the footage of yourself (to see how fast you could be idenetified as non-illegal), then to see if they really found any "illegals".

Not all police departments are anti gun/hunting in fact quite a high % of police officers (and firefighters) are hunters them selves. this % will go up the more rural you get.

I know for a fact that it is not easy to ID a person from a helicopter in the dark. they use the F.L.I.R. to find people and cars then they use the spotlight to do a more detailed inspection. The F.L.I.R. just showes up as a black screen and what ever is hot will show up as white. the brighter the white the hotter something is. they can even follow the heat from a tire on the cool ground.
You can always go and talk to the pilot himself and ask what he was looking for  flat out ask him if he is anti gun/hunting. You may find that he is a hunter, and during the time he is running the equipment the chopper he finds pockets of game animals and he could put you in a great place to hunt

:D , I agree with rickyp, from 32+ years at most levels of Law Enforcement and with time aloft in L.E. helicopters that was not a harassment procedure. My expierenece is that well over 50%-60%+ of police are hunters. That type of harassment would just not occur. Paranoia does exist about police as is evident by some responses here but believe me the police are just like you and I (now that I'm retired) just with a different job....<><....

Especially in your part of the country, I wouldn't be surprised with the illegal immigrant gig.

It is a sad fate that your 'yote hunt was disturbed. Oh well. We had something similar happen on a coyote hunt except it was a single prop private plane...the airport was nearby...this guy was doing acrobatics then I guess decided to come down to tree-top level  . We coulda reached up and touched him with a 30 ft pole that's how low he was.  :D

Sounds like you were near the White Tanks.  Back in the 70s I was stationed at Luke AFB.  I rode horses and hunted all over that dessert around there.  I knew the area well.  I hear it's changed a lot since then.  Anyway I had two experiences there you might be interested in.

First we were out in the dessert down near Gila Bend on a three day exercise.  We had set up an encampment, and was expecting aggressors to attack the camp that night.   I sent a couple of scouts out to check on things, they came back saying someone was coming up the valley.  We set up an ambush to catch the aggressors.  We waited until the people were well inside our trap, then we set off slap flares and lite up the whole area.  My people started shooting their M-16s and M-60s (loaded with blanks)  all around what we thought were the aggressors.   People started screaming, some ran, many fell to the ground and burrowed into the sand, others raised their hands and stood there.  All were speaking spanish, and we did not have a clue what they were saying, we just thought the aggressors were trying to confuse us.  So we went on the attack.  We went down and started taking them prisoner.  Then we discovered we did not have the aggressors but a bunch of illegials.  As the Border Patrol picked them up later they said it would probably be a long time before those 18 tried to sneak across the border again.

Second:  We were North-West of the base, there was nothing there but an airfield, and a fence surrounding about 50 acres.  This was an emergence landing field in case a pilot had an emergency and needed to land after take off, and could not make it back to the base.  We sometimes held training exercises there also.  We were out there for an overnighter, it had been several years since the Air Force had used this area for field training.    One of the first things we noticed was that the gate locks were gone, there was fresh aircraft tire marks on the pavement, from touch and goes.  Also fresh tire marks in the sand from big trucks leading to the runway.  We set up our camp near the North end of the runway.  The commander thought that the marks might have been made from drug runners, so he orders silence and no lights if we heard an airplane or heard trucks coming near the area.  About 3AM we were awakened, a sentry heard an airplane approaching.  We watched what looked like a C-130 touch down and run the length of the runway, dumping things out the back of the airplane.  Suddenly two old duce and a halfs crashed through the gates.  The trucks went to the south end of the runway and started picking up the dumped objects.  The Captain ordered total silence on our part, he did not want the runners to know we were there since all the troops had was blanks for their M-16s.  As the trucks approached the North end someone turned on a light (we never did find out who turned that light on).  Anyway the trucks veered off the runway and left quick, leaving several objects on the runway.  The Captain then ordered all light turned on, hoping that when they saw the number of people they would not return.  We placed a call to the State Police, they came out at daybreak.  After they arrived we went out to investigate the objects left on the runway.  They were bales of marijuana wrapped in heavy plastic.  Each of the seven remaining bales weighed about 80lbs.

At the time, the incident with the illegials was funny to us.  My troops were enjoying it so much, and I was caught up in the excitement.  Today looking back on it I now feel kind of sorry for those poor fellows we caught.  Not that we caught them, but the manner in which we did it.  We so overwhelmed them that several wet all over themselves.  We scarred them so bad, it's really a wonder that none had a heart attack, or died from fright.

On the second incident at the axially Field, with the drug runners.  The Captain and I were the only ones with loaded guns, and all we had was a .38 revolver.  Him being the commander and I being the ranking NCO, we were charged with protecting the M-16s that the troops were carrying.  The troops were carrying approximately 150 real M-16s, but no live ammo, just blanks.  If the drug traffickers had of knowen that, they would have tried to capture those weapons.  Fully automatic weapons were in high demand at that time, by drug runners.  There we sat with only two .38s to protect them and all the troops.  Yet we were sure the drug runners were heavily armed.  That was really a scarry night.  From then on The Captain and I always discreetly carried a few magazines of live .223 ammo with us for our M-16s.  He and I did not actively participate in shooting during the mock battles anyway.

ABAKER. Do you or anyone else living in the area have any fresh input about the success, or popularity of the minutemen? Are they welcomed by the ranchers?
I don't feel sorry for the illegals no matter how they are caught, scaring them is good, not bad. If I lived along that border I'd probably be in jail. I could not put up with trespassers day and night. POWDERMAN.  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)
