ultrasonic cleaning of rifle & trigger actions?
« on: April 17, 2005, 05:22:20 PM »
:D

any of you guys use ultrasonic parts washers
on your rifle & trigger actions?

any of you know guys or gunsmiths that do that?
if so, what could i expect to be charged for it?

i have found that my bolt action and trigger action
get fairly grimey and am wondering if you have advice
on getting those actions thoroughly clean.

I would suggest field stripping the rifle, remove the barreled action from the stock and remove the bolt.  On bolt actions this should be as for as you need to go.  Use carberator cleaner to remove fouling and carbon buildup.  Remember the carbcleaner will remove the metals rust protection!  Wipe with an oiled rag lubricate per manufacturers instructions with ATF as gun oil and a tiny bit of HighPressure grease on the contact areas such as the rear of the locking lugs.  The trigger is best lubricated with a dry film lubricant such as graphite or moly.  A product called
Lock-Eze contains graphite and a volatile solvent. The solvent evaporates leaving the graphite to lubricate your action.  Dry lube won't attract fouling and gum you action so guickly.
