How many use 10 gauges out there?
« on: January 18, 2005, 03:25:50 AM »
:D I have always been a 12 ga shooter but recently I have been thinking about going to a 10 ga.  Some of you who use them give me some pros and cons between the two.  Right now I shoot a single shot NEF with 3.5" turkey loads.  Recoil is brutal to say the least but in a hunting situation I don't even know it.  Help me make a decision.

i  used a 10ga for a few years, inbetween a 3" model 12 12ga and my present 3 1/2" 870 12 ga.  I bought the 870 because i got so sick of carrying that stupid 10ga around, not because it patterns better or is more fun to shoot.  Infact I hate shooting my 870 because of the short barrel and light weight but it's still much better than carrying that 10ga around all day.  I still use the 10ga (a BPS) for goose hunting.

A hunting buddy and a guy here at work both use 10ga. and both have told me that they've passed up shots at birds because they couldn't swing their guns into position fast enough at one time or another.

I have been turkey hunting for a number of years, both spring and fall seasons, in ny, pa, mass, va, w.va, fla, to name a few. I bought a mag-10 when ithaca first came out with them, probably, late or early 70's. When the gun got too valuable to carry, I went with what was the called a remington sp-10. Same gun, different name, that's all. I cut the barrel to 23inches, put a chrome-ally forcing cone in it, put a set of williams slugger fire sights on the rib, and it's an awesome turkey machine!!!!!!!. The only drawback is as you know, the WEIGHT. It's a extremely heavy gun, but the short barrel more than makes up for it. I haven't used it in 3 seasons now, I bought a charles-daly full camo synthetic 3and one half incher, half the weight, and almost the same gun. Same sight set-up, only I had a friend of mine make me a choke for it, and it too is one turkey machine. IF you guys want me to, I'll give you the name of the choke manufacturer. The best turkey choke in the business, in my opinion. Try the 10 ga, you'll really love it, minus the weight.   slik 1 :D

Well, I think my questions have been answered.  I like the ability to have a light single shot gun.  My 12ga. NEF is perfect but as stated the recoil on a 3.5" turkey load is pretty tough.  slilk 1, please pm me the name of the tube manufacturer.  I am going to get a tube for my 12ga when my barrel comes in from the factory.  I am just now looking for one so another option is appreciated.  Thanks for the replies.

i shoot a 10 ga. you really need a set of wheels to get this thing thru the woods, but it will roast a turkey 0 - 40 yds.

I got a H&R/NEF 10 ga MAB last year right before Uncle sent me back to the Desert so I haven't hunted with it yet, but it does pattern good.  If you go with the H&R the only thing I can say it loose the factory choke and buy a good after market choke.  I got a Comp-n-choke in super full for mine and it improved its proformance alot.

BPS 10ga, Syn camo stock, 26" bbl, .690 Kicks GT. Lengthend the forcing cone which improved the patterns plus took the sharp bite out of it. Hit's like a hammer.

Hunting public land I have to cover a lot of miles and that means a lightweight gun for me...so that rules out the 10ga.

I myself have not killed a turkey, but I called a tom in for my son three years back (he was 14).  He hammered it with my SP10.  I never would have guessed it would be such fun.  I let out one hell of a rebel yell.  We have three turkey tags this year.  My son will use the 10 again.  His cousins will use 12 or 20 guage.  We haven't got that figured out yet.  One of the boys is rather small for his age, but in his mind he is a giant.  I just don't want to get him spooked.  I will suggest a 20 for him.

My friend that I hunt with uses a Browning Gold 10 ga.  That is a light gun for a 10 ga and recoil is a pussycat.  It doesn't feel but maybe a couple onces heavier than the Super X2 that I carry.  It hammers turkeys too.  He shot his at 40 yards and it folded just as fast as mine did at 25.  He uses a Pattern Master tube and Remington Hevi-shot.
