How long before you get them in the fridge?
« on: April 24, 2005, 09:57:04 AM »
I killed a nice jake this morning at 8:00 a.m. and gutted him within 10 min.  It was 35 degrees.  I had a friend with me and wanted to get him a shot so I didn't get him in the freezer until 12:00 noon.  It only got up to 65 degrees today and the meat looked and smelled fine.  Do you think it is ok? oktx.

Yup!! It's a European custom to hang game birds for a few days before butchering them, so a few hours isn't gonna hurt. The turkey I killed Tuesday at 10am, wasn't home and in the fridge until 4pm, meat is/was just fine, we ate half of it already!! Air temp at the time of the kill was 65°, have never had a turkey go bad from normal handling in spring time temps. I just keep it in the shade/out of the sun until it gets home with me cuz I hunt 2+ hours from home......We seldom get 2 birds at a time, so one of us is usually waiting at the truck for a bit while the other is still out hunting.
