03 Springfield Sporter Price
« on: April 04, 2005, 02:08:02 AM »
Yesterday I saw a sporterized Springield with nice wood, Redfield peep, sling, and Douglas barrel for $850.I thought that was a mite steep, as untouched military guns in good shape are going for that. What do you guys think?

Sounds Steep to me! I know the unconverted ones go for some nice money but once they are converted it really cuts the price the local shop had one that was converted with every thing you said except the barrel was original. Price was 295 bucks so I cannot see that adding a douglas barrel should increase the price 550 bucks. Heck for 850 bucks you could get a Remington 700 Heavy Varmint or Police/Tactical   that will really shoot instead of taking your chances on a used Springfield that has lost all collector value. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

The Springfield has some weaknesses like a two piece firing pin. Original condition doesn't bother me much as I'm a shooter, not a collector. But $850 for a sporterised one seems a bit much. Someone already snapped it up  'cause it's gone.

local pawn shop must have a dozen 03s and 1917s in various stages of sporterization for under $300, most well under that price.  To my way of thinking, a Bubba conversion shuold go for $250 max.

Last year I bought a gunsmith (Rex Peterson) 03 conversion in 270; restocked, scoped, rebarreled, reblued, Timney trigger, etc, for $250.  Made in the 60s.  You gotta look around.  That one was a radio ad.
