I am with you on preferring the shorter barrels. I have a 223 ten inch. I have gone to the 40 gr. v-max almost exclusively. They will do anything I can ask of this caliber and they seem to be more accurate out of my gun. 23 gr. IMR-4198 is great in my gun (work up to this load to be sure it is safe in yours) and produces less muzzle blast than other powders that I tried. Accuracy also improved over the other powders. I have not shot it over a chrono, but the book claims ~2900 fps. out of our ten inch barrel.
