10 Inch .223 barrels.

Anyone tried one of these or seen any information posted.

Seems to me the 40gr Vmax type bullets could make a pretty good
varmint round with this barrel lenth.

Should out run the hornet and hold it's own with the .221 Fireball.

The Lyman 47th reloading manual
has a lot of loads for 10" .223's
but nothing on the 40 Vmax's.
They may not have been on the market when it was printed.

Should make a good walk around
ground hog round, I wear ear plugs
varmint hunt'n so muzzle blast
shouldn't be a problem.

I have plenty of .223 brass and
dies,just don't care for the longer
barrels.

Any comments welcomed,pro or con.

I am with you on preferring the shorter barrels. I have a 223 ten inch. I have gone to the 40 gr. v-max almost exclusively. They will do anything I can ask of this caliber and they seem to be more accurate out of my gun. 23 gr. IMR-4198 is great in my gun (work up to this load to be sure it is safe in yours) and produces less muzzle blast than other powders that I tried. Accuracy also improved over the other powders. I have not shot it over a chrono, but the book claims ~2900 fps. out of our ten inch barrel.

I have some 4198 on hand,will give it a try later on.

Found a .223 barrel on the cheap
so I figure already have'n brass and dies on hand it's the best way to go and cheapest.

I had 10 incher and I loved it. I cost me a whopping 70 bucks.

It shot like dream and was fun to shoot. The first time I ever shot it was into the ground for a function fire test using military surplus ammo and it promptly set the leaves on fire! I had to stomp it out.

It has a great fireball using military surplus ammo and it was always a crowd pleaser at the range. :eek:

Handloads were much more accurate. With a 2 power Burris scope it was a crow killing rig. Like and idiot I sold it. Wish I had it back... :roll:

I just picked one (10" .223) up a couple weeks ago and haven't shot it yet. I hunted rabbits all winter with a 16" carbine and loved it with the "blue dot" reduced loads:

55 Gr PSPCL (or FMJ) and 10 gr. Blue Dot
45 Gr HP and 11 gr. Blue Dot

I've loaded a new bunch up but am currently focused on Turkey hunting, so I haven't tried these loads in the 10" yet. I'll probably do that next month. Meantime, I'm waiting to score with my new Encore Turkey barrel...

If anyone has other interesting loads for the 10", please post 'em!

I took the 10" .223 I got from Wally to the range at lunch today. Was enjoyable to shoot. It shot surprisingly well with a red dot on it, will be putting my Trophy 2-6x or Burris 3-12x on it next time to see how it really shoots.

All I ever shot in your barrel was the Winchester 45 JHP Wally-World
specials. They did very well. A good hand load should do very well.
