Flash suppressors and accuracy?
« on: March 24, 2006, 12:19:13 PM »
I have a Rock River Arms A4 with a 16" Wilson SS Varmint barrel and would like to have a flash suppressor installed or purchase another 16" standard (Elite CAR) barrel with a flash suppressor already installed.

However, I'm not going to do either one, if the accuracy is effected by the use of a flash suppressor.

Do flash suppressors adversely effect accuracy?

Thank you, Bowhunter57

I am not a gun expert, but I don't see why it would affect accuracy. I'm sure if it did no one would buy flash hiders.

Flash suppressors have bores that are larger than the barrel. They are designed to redirect hot gasses out to the sides of the bore so that it is less visible to someone down range. They should not affect the path of the bullet as long as they are undamaged.

and deliver 3-4" groups at  600 yds. If the suppressor is hurting your accuracy, something is not right with it. Such things do occur, but are not the norm.

A flash suppressor should not bother accuracy if it has vents
all the way around it. Some of the Flash supressor/muzzle breaks will
on the other hand cause problems with accuracy. Inside of 100 yards you will not notice it much but as distance increases the difference
will become more pronounced.

Torque on a flash suppressor can have an effect on accuracy. The Army Marksmanship Unit put theres on hand tight and hold them in place with loc_tight.
That said my rack grade Rock shoots 1/2 moa with loads it likes, and I have not touched the flash suppressor. If I were to spend money on a target grade barrel, I would probably put the flash suppressor on the way the AMU does. I would also use a suppressor/compensator to allow better  muzzle control during rapid fire.
