Tattling policy no replacement for ethics

By Stephanie Kiszczak

Since the Columbine massacre and the more recent shooting in Red Lake, Minn., school officials have been pulling teeth trying to conjure up new methods preventing school violence.

America has reached a new low.

A school board in Georgia joined the student sellout bandwagon and teamed up with CrimeStoppers, an organization that awards students to turn in peers for drugs, vandalism, theft or firearms.

Students are being taught to sell one another out.

*FW Note:  There is an ethical dilema that can be referred to as "doing the right thing", but for some reason this young lady's discussion of the subject just strikes me as mincing between being a snitch for money or being a snitch just because you can.  Doesn't intent count for anything anymore?

They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

sounds good to me...at least in a school setting. if someone has a gun their locker and they are planning on using it, or if they have drugs with them in school, i am all for getting em disciplined by whatever means we can. maybe they wont be deadbeat losers on welfare with 5 kids later.

i dunno about the money reward though...but right now it seems that $100 reward is cheaper than the ramifications of Littleton Colorado all over again, or of even one kid burning him/herself out on drugs.

in the "Real world" we do this all the time. Catch someone in the act, and sometimes the authorities reward you, or the family of the victim does. its not as if theyre rewarding them for CREATING the situation, just for finding it and saving us all some headaches.

agreed, however ethics should be taught at home, not by the school. the school is just trying to aviod any more serious problems, and if the kids dont have ethics by H.S. age, then it may be best to MAKE it in their best interests to solve problems.
