Interesting OLD Thread

Hey guys, I was rambling around way back in the dust heep (Page 11  ;)) and I came across this old thread and I found it quite interesting. I can relate completely. It's from 2005 but it still holds true today.
Ironfoot was the only one who posted there that I recognized. You remember this one Iron?   :)  Are any of these guys still around?

The first thing I noticed was the way they referred to other people. No insults, no yelling (CAPS), and a very civil tone about the whole thing. I wonder if they were all older men.  ???

SBG,

If you'll allow an off topic, well tangent observation to your statement, meant with no disrespect but to allow input from my observations over the years.
I may have missed some event that stimulated this post, thinking that I did, since civility seems to be the matter at hand.
I used to believe that age and wisdom went hand in hand.  I have seen that many aged ones are not wise just as many young men are wise.
My conclusion would be that the vintage of the man, just like the vintage of a good wine with aging and purpose results in a mature example.

Aristotle is quoted as having said, "Its is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."
I need to be reminded of this time to time.

The only thing that "stimulated" this post is that I found an old thread interesting and thought others might also. The fact that it actually showed people from both North and South having experienced the same age old friendly gesture of waving at a total stranger as they passed on the open road was what I found most interesting. I still experience this every day, and most people from the big cities find it quite strange.

This post merely demonstrates how people from the North and South actually got along in this forum without trashing each other for the pure spite of it. I was struck by the way they expressed their thoughts without any harsh words or sentiments.

Being civil doesn't mean you have to agree with someone. It doesn't mean you have to kiss up to them. It simply means that, when a retort comes to mind that is emotional in nature rather than an advancement of an argument, you do not say it. Attacking people serves no purpose, no matter how indignant or self-righteous one might feel.

This post is not aimed at any individual in this forum, as I have named none but ironfoot, and that's strictly because he was the only person in the thread that I recognized. It is, however aimed at us ALL, to show we can demonstrate civility if we so desire. Those men, regardless of age, had it down pat to the point we could all learn from them.

I'm a bit sleepy while reading right now but I do believe that I wasn't specific to make note of the sentence "I wonder if they were all older men. ".  This is the statement that I was singling out.  I apologize for the implication that you were pointing out individuals or baiting.  That wasn't my intent.

That sentence struck me as I'd referenced the idea of age and reason in a conversation with an 85 yo man today.  This is a fella who has aged as a good wine and become wise compared to many his age.  In agreeing with Aristotle the ability to rise above the emotion of argument and consider facts on both sides is not an innate ability but one that is acquired.

May we all enjoy the blessing of discussion here.

One can take offesnce or not. I read and I saw. I choose not to take offence.
Caps are important and I find this a miniscule thing to pick as a battle line.

Those are some good points to look at lc. You are absolutely right in that age doesn't always bring wisdom with it.  :)

wl, take offense at what?   ???  What is there for anyone to be offended by?

Who do you think has picked a battle line?    ???
When a person uses all CAPS in a post (in computer terms, because it is text only and no voice inflexion involved) it indicates yelling at someone. In what way would you find that useful? Nobody needs to be yelled at. It is a basic courtesy.
I found an old thread interesting... If you didn't, there is no need for you to even comment.
Move on to something else.

That's not what I'm talking about, wl. I'm talking about somebody putting most, or all, of their post in caps. Titles or headings are fine in caps, because it can draw attention to it more easily. But if the body of a post is all caps, it is considered yelling. Even if it's just a sentence or two. A word here and there is just fine, like headings and titles, it shows emphasis in the absence of an actual voice being spoken.

Hope that clears it up a little.
I'm feeling a bit under the weather so I think I'm gonna turn in early tonight.

SBG you'll have to forgive WL and his CAPS fetish. I fear he sees goblins alround at the mere thought of pointing out common courtesy would be better served by just letting go yet he sees offense where none is given.

I do find your comments both refreshing and true. Also don't you find it interesting and somewhat sad that your points are not fully seen by all today going by the responces forthcoming.

I do speak my mind as well as hold no grudge, said you should be forgiven and meant it all the way to my bones.

Why slim, I am his friend and only wish WL well. If I were to ever meet him it would be with open arms, a smile, and a handshake. Dislike and hate only eats at the person who is doing it and at 70 I have no time to waste on such foolishness and negativeism.
