m77 270 wont group!!!!
« on: May 16, 2005, 12:00:59 PM »
My M77 wont group to save my life!! I have it zero at 100 yards. The first shot hit 1/2" high, the second hit 2" left, the third hit 2" high, and so-on. This was off a gun vice so it wasnt me. I talked to a guy at work who has the same gun in 7MM and he has the same problem. Is this a common accurance?

Its sad when my 200$ H&R handi rifle shoots less than 1" groups and my 600$ ruger wont. :(

Sounds like it could be a bedding problem.  Stock is touching the barrel somewhere along the channel.  Lawdog

Had a 270 77 do the same thing - after i refinished the stock - i put a small shim (piece of the ladies credit card) under the front piller - problem solved.

my 270 is the only ruger i havent had trouble with.  mine is as accurate a rifle as i could expect.   before you check anything else,  ensure all the scope ring screws are tight, and that the scope itself isnt the problem.   after you rule out those things,  proceed with your train of thought.   i guess what i am saying is rule out the easy stuff first.

I have changed the scope just to make sure. Deffinatly not the problem. I think I'm going to sell it and buy a browning a-bolt.

My M77 in 7MM RemMag has/had a problem with factory ammo.  I tried Remington, WW, and Federal with poor results.  I have had the opposite results with reloads.  It loves Hornaday, Speer, and the same 175 grain Remington bullets it did not like in factory ammunition.  I have not tried current factory ammunition in it.

It likes large amounts of H4831, H870 or AA8700.   They take up a lot of case volume.

Did I do something that improved the accuracy other then reloading?  I am not sure.  Because of a transfer I had to put it away for a while.  When I got back to it I may have checked the screws in the stock and scope.  The first scope on it was a 4x and the accuracy problem was resolved with that scope on it.

I like the tang safety because I shoot both right and left handed.

Try it without the vise---and just use sandbags-------and let the shooter do the work and see if things change.

Next try differnet loads-----I had an A-Bolt with 130 grainers was a shotgun pattern-----tried 150's got 1in groups-----tried 140's-- one hole groups  -----guess which one's I used from then on.

Have you tried different ammo in this rifle? That's the advantage of reloading, the ability to try different loads, until you find one that the rifle likes. Assuming it is not a rifle problem such as scope, scope mount, or bedding; the liklihood is you need to try different loads until you find one that works in that rifle. I would be very surprised if you couldn't get that rifle to shoot less than MOA.

I have had the same problem with a few mod. 77s, In fact gust the other day i took a 338win to the range with a sack of factory and some hand loads and it looked like i was shooting a shot gun so i brought it home and broke it down and inspected it and could see the mortice was showing signs of moving around so i cleaned it out and glass bedded the action and took it out again and this time it was a completly different gun. It didn't seem to make much difference what ammo. i used it shot withen a one inch group. Just some thing you might want to consider. While you are at it you might want to free float your barrel and then you can make adjustments with pressure points, Like one of the posters said he used a credit card to make his pressure point, I have found that you can make almost any rifle shoot good if you just stay with it untill you get it right.
Hope this helps, Good luck............Joe.............

First, I really like my Ruger 77's...........that said......most of them didn't shoot really good out of the box.........and require glass bedding the action, free floating the barrel, and a trigger job.........After that, just about all of them have shot sub-MOA...........unfortunatly, when I buy a Ruger....I know that they will have to have some work to shoot well............AND THEN I FOUND THE UGLY SAVAGE...............THEY SHOOT GREAT OUT OF THE BOX.......

but there kind of like a moped........fun to ride, but you don't want anyone to see you riding one.............

After a while.......the looks of the Savage started to grow on me........especially after taking one to the range........
