1885 Low Wall in 22WCF
« on: May 14, 2005, 07:05:10 AM »
I just picked up a low wall chambered in 22WCF.  The rifle was made around 1920 and the cartridge became obsolete in 36'.
I was able to find a .228 mold for 60gr. cast bullets and brass is available from Buffalo Arms.  However, the only loading data I can find is for 40gr. cast bullets.  Any thoughts?

The rifle is great shape, has just enough bluing gone to give it a great patina and the bore is like new.  It has an aperature sight installed on the receiver as well.
Thanks,
Dana

Any thoughts?

Yes yer a lucky cuss.

I always thought that little 22 centerfire would be a fun cartidge to play
with, I love messing with 25-20's and that is a simular round.

I am sure somebody has some loading data for a 60 grain bullet but
if you cain't find any I would start just a little below the 40 grain's
minimum listing and go from there.

I'm not certain the twist rate will stabilize the 60 grain bullet well enough to get decent accuracy in the old Winchester. It was designed for a 40-45 grain bullet, so you may not get tight groups.
Try 3. grs of Unique, with the 60, and don't go over 4. grains, while working up. If the accuracy is no good, try the same load with a 40 grain. This load is about 1450 fps.
