I have been conversing with JPH45 about the .30-30 barrel I just got from him.
I have mounted it on a SB2 receiver with synthetic stock and installed a Bushnell Sportsman 3-9X 40 mm that came off of my .45-70. This receiver has had a factory trigger lightening when I sent it in for a .357 Mag barrel a year ago. After mounting the barrel, I checked it with a .001" feeler gauge that would lock up between the receiver and the barrel, but it couldn't be pull out once it was locked in.
I shot about 10 rounds through it yesterday, loaded with 28.0 gr surplus IMR 4895, Win 150 Jfn, R-P brass and Win LR primers. The primers were backing out a little and the groups were right around 1 1/2" at 100 yards, so I reduced the load to 27.0 gr.
Here's the results of backing down 1.0 gr.
For some reason, I can't get this image big enough, but there is a fouling shot to the left of the bull in the 5 ring and then 5 shots in the black and the left portion of the bullseye in .875" at 100 yards.
The only thing I did different, besides the powder charge, was to run a bore brush though it and another one in the chamber. It evidently took two shots, I burned the first one off the target, to get the degree of fouling it needed to shoot good.
Do you really think I need to tell JPH I'm a very happy camper?
