Contender was made in 1974 can I........
« on: April 26, 2005, 08:21:51 PM »
I checked the serial number of my contender and it was made in 1974. Is this the pistol frame? or can I use high pressure barrels on it? Ant help would be greatly appreciated. Jimmy

Your 1974 frame can use any barrel manufactured for Contender or G2.  Most "high pressure" rounds (.243, 30-06, etc.....) are only chambered for the Encore frame and barrels do not interchange between the two.

As for how to determine if your frame originally left the facotry as a postol frame or rifle frame I have  no idea, sorry.

Thank you Curtis. I do appreciate it. Ive been playing with the idea of a 454 casull if I can get accurate with it id like to try deer hunting with it. It at present sports a 30-30 super 14. Thanks again Jimmy

I personally believe that you will find the 30/30 the superior "deer cartridge" to the 454, unless you like to have the snot kicked out of ya!! I also believe that a .45 bore is "on the edge" for the little contender bbl..  Marty

Ok thank you Marty I really do appreciate it. I wish I could get one in .270 or 30-06 but those might even be a bit much. Thanks again Jimmy

You are definately in Encore territory with those calibers as well as the .454.  If you want to be spanked by the Contender you have to go with the 45-70 or one of the JDJ hand cannon calibers.

357 Herrett is a potent round in the Contender if you don't mind forming brass and hand loading.  You might consider 375 Winchester if you want availability of factory ammo.  A nice, flat shooting (relatively) deer caliber for Contender is the 7-30 Waters, but may not be as potent as you are looking for given the calibers you mentioned.
