ram meat
« on: February 27, 2005, 07:09:32 AM »
I'm taking my son to a preserve here in MI. and he wants to shoot a ram.  My question ( since many of you here seem to have shot rams before) is what have you done with the meat? Is it good to eat?  Do you have any suggestions on how to cook it?  any help would be appreciated.

We've taken six of them. Donated the meat. Some seem to like it OK but I don't eat sheep meat anyway so for sure didn't want to eat the old rams.

Cube the meat into 1" pieces and marinate in Wishbone Italian Dressing for a couple of hours then put a piece of alum. foil on the grill or put them in a frying pan and cook them up.

thanks for the quick replies so far.  I like the cubed / marinade idea. I just hate shooting what I don't like to eat but I admit to doing that very thing before.  Thats why I'm shooting a boar but my son has his heart set on a ram, anyway I think it will be a great father son activity.  I'ld still like to here from others as to if you eat it or have good recipes

I shot a ram and didn't want to waste the meat so I cooked mine on the barbaque and then cut it in small peices, divided it into zip lock bags and put them all in the freezer but one. I use that one for Dog treats. My babys love the meat and I will have a mount for the wall.

Bob W. Where in Mi. are you hunting? My Dad recently mentioned that he'd like a ram mount, and if it aint too far from home, we might be intersted. Thanks!

A butcher once told me when I shot a large merino ram, "Do you like lamb?  It's not lamb.  Do you like mutten?  It's old mutton."

Mike, we are going to the Trophy Ranch in Ubly MI.  I've never been there but have seen it on some of the outdoor programs in MI and they are affilliated with the Rooster Ranch in Ubly also.  Well it looks like the general  opinions are that ram meat is not exactly fit for a king.  I'm thinking I will try the marinade in Italian dressing just for kicks, use it for dog food and maybe try to make some jerky out of it.

My son shot a young Texas Dall on a preserve this April.  The meat is very mild and tasty.  I took some chops, put them in a bowl and poured a beer and some soy sauce over them, let soak for a few hours and grilled to medium.

Because my wife recently did this:

I am giving the crock pot a work out today.  Soaked about a 3lb piece of "ram ham" in milk overnight.  Working it up with onions and secret ingredients right now.. :-D ...the neighbors want to know what's for dinner. If the recipe works out, I'll post it.  Later, JeffG  :D

Well, I gave it a shot. Cooking, I mean, and it's not bad, like venison. I posted my recipe.  I have a lot of ram meat, so I am sure I will come up with more.  :D

Way 2 go Jeff.  I have smoked the back strap over some mesquite and found it to be quite tasty!   Those Merino rams are the meatiest of the sheep commonly found on exotic ranches, atleast the lesser expensive ones to hunt.
