First bear down of the season
« on: May 16, 2005, 09:25:27 AM »
My hunting partner headed north to do the fish wheel so I headed to my stand myself.  I was only there for a about 30 minutes when a sow and two cubs came in.  I viedoed them for about 15 minutes before she went on alert.  She gathered the cubs and high tailed it out of there.  The boar came in 30 minutes latter and eased into the bait barrel.  He then caught the sows scent and headed out on her trail.  I had one opening at 20 yards so I let a 125 grain Slick Trick loose and double lunged him.  He went about 30 yards and was dead in 20 seconds.

Taking him in to measure tonight. 18 9/16 green and 7' x 6'6" square.

Congratulations! This may be a dumb question, but do Spring bear taste any different than Fall bear?

Allright Dave!!
He is beautifull.  I knew you would'nt let us down. I figured that it was the time of year for your bear hunting and have been waiting for a story.

Eating Bear
Spring bear have only eaten a little grass and a lot of my dog food.  Fall bears have been eating fish and have a lot more fat on them.

Most of this will go to Wasilla Meats and be turned into Polish sausage and pepperoni sticks.  Some will be made into corned bear which is great.

Me gone................... well again tomorrow night as backup and camera man for my partner that is helping with the veterans that are coming up.

But I need to head north too for browns.....decisions, decisions.

Beautiful bear.  Folks think I'm crazy when I describe them as "neon black" but that's a neon black bear.  Nice !!!  Keeping my fingers crossed for your guests.

Nice bear Dave. Are you south or north of town? Thinking about heading up north this weekend and get #2 myself. I sure liked your ladder idea.
good luck on #2.

Mike:  I am out in the Arm.  We spotted a 6' last night and one other that came in but caught us off guard.  There is a big boy around still as he keeps crapping on my path.  No respect at all.
