Tick Repellent Receipe
« on: May 02, 2005, 06:25:22 AM »
Not sure how many of you have a problem with ticks in your area, but around here they can be pretty bad.  I know guys who won't hardly hunt spring turkeys on account of them.  The following receipe is one I found at a mushroom hunting website that seems to work pretty well for me.  A good deal better than deet based repellents like off, and a lot more pleasant to use.   It also seems to keep the mosquitoes away too. The receipe was credited to the USDA forestry service.

A good homemade recipe tick repellent for on your clothes and your pets follows (from the USDA forest service):

2 cups white vinegar
1 cup Avon skin so soft bath oil
1 cup water
1 tablespoon eucalyptus oil.
Put this mixture in an old spray bottle. No guarantees but it works for some with success.

I pre-treat my clothing, and then spray a little more on as I am getting out of the truck.

Good Hunting To All,

Frank

I've been using permethrin products for several years, it will kill a tick within a few minutes of it crawling on your clothing and lasts the entire 30 day season here with one application, even after repeated washings, and it's odorless from the getgo. You only treat your clothing, not skin....great stuff. I also wear tick gators to keep em from crawling up my boots. I'm not a fan of DEET, it's kinda scary not knowing what it's long term exposure affects are. The first time I got a tick on my pant leg, I watched the tick, after about 3 minutes of crawling slowly up my leg, it just fell off!
