Handi Barrel life
« on: May 03, 2005, 01:19:31 PM »
I been doing some reading on barrel life and opinions seem to vary. I also know its how you take care barrel ect. I have two buddies who are bench rest shooters and one says 1500 rounds and one say he can get close to 3000 on his barrels before he replaces them. Anyone else have a thought or experience on how long barrel life is on the handi rifle?

Depends on caliber. High velocity cartridges eat barrels much faster than more moderate cartridges. Them benchrest boys junk barrels when they degrade to an accuracy most of us would be delighted to be getting in the first place.

A very rough guess would be about 3500 for a .25-06, 5-6000 for a .308 or .30-06, and higher than I can count for the pistol calibers.
It is the duty of the good citizen to love his country and hate his gubmint.

A benchrest shooter who's getting 1/2 MOA might as well not even show up.  But for your average shooter, that's a respectful group.  With a 223 barrel I'd guess around 10,000 or more.
