How good are Turkey's to eat/ Update
« on: May 05, 2005, 05:49:08 AM »
In all honesty...I must post the results of last night's Turkey Dinner, although I beleive this was the Chef's fault and not that of the bird.
We had company show up last night right before the bird was due to come out of the oven, and they were more interested in Partying than eating Turkey....and they got me slightly tanked.  By the time we got to the Turkey it was more than an hour too long in the oven and pretty darn chewey.  Then to top things off..I forgot all about the fresh corn on the cob.  I baked it in the oven with the husk on, and this was the first corn of the year, and my absolute favorite way to eat it.  I am actually more upset about the corn than the turkey.  Oh well....gonna have a LOT of Turkey soup.  I would have loved to tell the story of the perfect Wild Turkey dinner...but it just did not happen that way....maybe next time.
....make it count

Robert, I don't think there is a perfect "wild" turkey dinner other than frying the breast as I have mentioned, but the best turkey I've ever eaten was a domestic bird cooked in a Weber kettle BBQ over briquettes. I chose a 12lb hen, arranges the coals on each side of the bird with a drip pan under it below the grill. I had to add hot briquettes part way thru the cooking time, also put a couple pans of moist apple smoker chips on the coals during cooking, but it came out fantastic. Mmmmm num num....

Thanks for sharing your latest dinner experience, reminds me of my huntin partner's wife who did pretty much the same thing with a jake he shot a few years ago, it got overcooked in a cooking bag and they had family over for dinner as it turned out, Jack was trully disappointed since he hadn't eaten a jake yet and anticipated a culinary delight with the young bird.....tweren't to be!

Robert, when My son shot his turkey a few years ago, I also over cooked it a bitt too much (easier to do on a wild bird than a pen raised fatty).  No I was not tank (at that particular time :-D ).  I chopped the  bird up nice and fine, added some mayo, salt, pepper and a few other nice items to make a turkey salad sandwich spread.  Everyone loved it.

Most people over cook wild game as well as wild turkeys. My favorite is turkey breast cut into stripes. Then dipped in a beat egg wash. Then place flour and salt and pepper as needed in a brown paper bag. Then put the turkey srtips in the bag and shack for 30 seconds. Then cook in  hot grease in a deep fryer until lightly golden not to long or it will be tough.Good Luck.Beware everone will gobble them wild turkey breast strips in a minute!
