Kinds of calls

I am thinking about going turkey hunting. I have absolutely no experience doing this. What kinds of calls should I use.

From my limited experience the box call is the easiest to learn to use with the slate/friction calls being next easiest.  I am still trying to get the hang of mouth calls.  Got three different ones and none sound right to me.  Got no idea which mouth call is easiest to learn to use.  Hope others here can chime in with some ideas.  Lawdog

Lawdog, try the Primos Raspy Double Hook, it's the easiest diaphram call I've ever tried and works well, toms come a runnin!!!! I've been using it for several years now, other than my Dale Rohm custom box call, it's my favorite.

Im just about as new as it comes as well (been hunting birds 2 years and aint shot one yet....came close last year.)  I absolutely LOVE the box call (the one I have is a Quaker Boy Hurricane all weather.)  I can just BOOM out clucks.  But the slate call with striker of choice, ar least Ive found, offers more range (I can purr wicked easy, but the box call dont seem to like to do it very easily.)  Im glad Im not the only one having problems with mouth calls.  I just cant seem to get the thing to sound right (and I bought a package of four!)
Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information and the site link.  I will order a couple of those Primos Raspy Double Hook calls and start practicing.  If you don't mind me asking, what do you think of the Gobbler "Shaker Call" for a locator call?  Lawdog

I have one, although I've never been in a position to use it where I wanted a tom to think a jake was interloping into his territory. In that scenario it could be very affective if the tom cooperates!  I think using one would be fine on private property where you are alone and don't have to worry about attracting the attention of another hunter, but on public land, its use could be unsafe.

My 2 cents worth, but I am VERY partial to the slate call, and I have been turkey hunting for a while now.  Turkeys CAN be called in with any of the calls, but I have closed the deal on quite a few longbeards with soft purrs and clucks that are difficult to do (at least for me) with other types of calls. The drawback with any of the friction type calls is hand movement, and for that reason I use a small sit behind blind.  For a demonstration of the effectiveness of the slate call see the thread I posted "latest victims".

Good hunting to you.

Frank

Using it in the jake mode, yes! The gobbler mode is a little less realistic, bit still acceptable. My huntin partner used his in the jake mode for a signal to me when I was walking down the road back to the truck to meet up after hunting a couple weeks ago, it sounded pretty darn good from about 100yds away, if I'd been hunting, it would have got me going!!!

I'm a bit biased because this call is made here in Florida, but I like the Tom Gaskins call from Palmdale, Fla. Cabelas sells them. It's about the easiest call to use for the first timer. It makes wonderful wonderful yelps and clucks.

Rusty,

Could you explain how this call is used?  I take it you remove the cork and rub the striker across the call someplace?  Lawdog

I hold mine in my left hand(I'm right handed) with the Tom Gaskin print towards my left palm, and strike across the lip with the striker held between my thumb and middle finger of my right hand. It's a sweet, soft call, easy to use.

Thanks for the information.  Got one ordered.  One can never have enough calls.  Got till next season to practice as the spring season is over.  Not bad spring this year.  Between the wife and I we put 5 in the freezer.  Again thanks for the tip on this call.  Lawdog

Neither did I.  I'm heading out for one last weekend hoping that the birds are feeling frisky.  I feel a bit unprepared with my simple mouth diaphragm, makin clucks, but it has worked in the past.  I have a small single hand box that I can make some cuts and purrs with.  Maybe I'll throw that into the mix as well.
