Whats your pet load for deer and black bear in the 45/70 handi rifle? Mine is new but i hope that my marlin pet load shoots fine in the handi its the hornady 350RN in front of 45.0 grains of IMR4198. ( about 1900 fps) And i might ad that even though this load is listed as max load in my hornady manual , i spoke with hornady and the pressure level is right at 28000psi. If this load doesn't shoot well in my rifle i want to try Speer 400 grain  bullets at just above 1800 fps and for those of you who are interested the lever action loading data in the speer manual  does NOT exceed 28000. ( I also spoke and sent e-mails to speer so thats from them )

Tanoose, use the same bullet in front of 28.0 grains of 2400, very accurate and easy shooting....<><.... :grin:

 300 grs. at 1800 fps is potent, at both ends! 400 grs at that velocity must be downright ripsnorting! Tanoose, you're gonna have some fun!

How about  a 300 grain Nosler partiton at 2300 fps??? that's what my favorite loading does from a 18.5" Marlin Guide Gun...

I found that with the 300 gr JHP's (not talking Noslers) anything much over 1850 fps ruined a lot of meat at the close ranges(25yds to 100 yds) I shoot at.  Switched over to the 400 gr Speer FN three years ago, and load that with 44 grs of Reloader 7 and Rem 9 1/2 primers for around 1750 fps and found that about perfect for my shooting needs.  Bullet expands nicely without any bloodshot meat, and the deer don't go more than 25 yds with a lung shot; at least not the 6 I"ve shot with that load so far.  Recoil is a bit stout from the bench, but I don't hunt from the bench.

350 Gr. Hornady roundnose over a CASEFUL of H4198 using Hodgdon's Level 3 data.
This is good for around 2300 fps, and is good for EVERYTHING in North America.

I see no need for reduced loads, this is my one "go-to" load that I use in my Handi-Rifle.

Recoil is fairly stout, but you can handle it.

Hey Glock i guess its time for me to buy that hodgdon manual , thats a stout load , the most i ever went was chrony at 2130fps with the hornady 350rn  and that was in my Marlin 1895 . Does Hodgdon list pressures with there loading data?

Call the techs at Hodgdons...they will give you a-lot of info over the phone...and they will let you know which ones are safe or not...not all of the data that's published jives...if you look in several manuals...you will see what I mean...some loads that are listed as Ruger #3 loads in one... and are max Marlin loads in another...and so on...I've talked to most of the guys there at Hodgdons...and they helped me a-lot when developing my Marlin loads...using the 300 grain  Nosler Partion...

One 300 grain bullet that's been doing rather well ( from what I've read ) is the Speer's Uni-Core..it's listed as a Hollow point...but...it's more of a dimple really...and it holds together nicely on small bears and down...it's a-lot cheaper than the Noslers...so it might make a good alternative for you...

Ok, for all you technical sorts out there, what does my pet load of 28.0 grains of 2400 behind a 350 grain Hornady RN look like as far as velocity and pressure go? Has anyone put it through a chronograph? All I know is it shoots easy and is very accurate out of my 45-70 Handi with the standard 22" barrel. I would really appreciate some of your technical info and numbers here. I have been shooting this for a while and posted it on the old site. I know some here are shooting it with good results, hopefully one of you have the info I desire. Also what do you think of it as a Northeast whitetail loading? Do you think the bullet would perform correctly at the velocities attained? If no one has this info how about someone out there with the equipment and loading running it through the chronograph or a computer program and letting us know.  Thanks....<><.... :grin:

I think a call to Hornady is in order.....I sent em an email asking what velocity the 500gr RN was terminally effective, it took em 2 or 3 weeks to answer....They did say the 350gr was designed for the 45-70 velocities, but the Hodgdon annual shows it in the lever action loads at 1700-2000fps, so it may not open up starting out 200 fps below that starting load. :cry:

OK, for a non reloader like me what's the "affordable" options for the .45/70?

Since I like to shoot alot and I don't reload the .45/70 may not be the right caliber for me.  However, I am thinking about it anyway, "just because".  I've been looking at the factory ammo choices, in particular, the PMC 405 gr. LFP at Cabela's and thinking they might be pretty good for target shooting.

Has anyone had any experiences with the .45/70 PMC's?

For hunting,  I know there's some good .45/70 factory loads out there that will work good up close for deer and bear in the cedar swamps.  I know the factory hunting loads are pricey but it's not like I'd be shooting a whole bunch of them.  Most likely I'll be doing most of my shooting with the target rounds.
