Longest shot you'd take with open sights
« on: April 07, 2005, 04:07:55 PM »
I tried real hard, but the whole scope thing just never took off with me. I know that limits my range, but by how much? Haven't had a chance to figure that out yet, so I figured I'd ask y'all.

What's the longest shot you'd take on deer-sized game with open sights?

4/8: Hey thanks for all the comments. I guess where I'm going with this is if I choose not to use a scope, then I am effectively choosing not to use some calibers because they're really better suited for the past 200 yd shots. That may sound really obvious to y'all, but I'm just now figuring it out.

Well, if I owned anything with open sites on it, I would limit myself to about 200 yards I suppose.

I can hit (consistently) a 2 foot gong at 200 yards offhand with a flintlock muzzleloader and that’s cool. No big deal, lots of people can do it.

That’s not good enough for shots on live game.

100 yards, Maybe 150 on the outside with a center fire rifle with open irons.

For the most part I don’t think most people have a clue of what a target looks like at 200 yards, let alone 1000 yards. I do.

Longest clean kills have been about 125 yards (groundhog, shot from a Mossberg 42 .22LR) and 75 yards (deer, 12 ga. slug with smooth barrel).

Longest shot (rifle) has been at a 20 inch gong at 300 yards, shooting Enfield SMLE No. 1 .303 Brit. using the ladder peep sight.

Longest shot (handgun) has been 100 yards at a jug of gasoline set in front of a burning road flare, shooting a TC Contender .44 mag with 10 inch barrel.

Lets see,

Longest shot on a groundhog with .223 contender 14" was 392 yards.
Longest every day of the week is the 200 meter rams and sometimes we take the chicken out to 200 meters just for giggles and grins.

It depends what I'm shooting at, and what I'm shooting with.

If I'm shooting at starlings or crows in a plowed field with a good backstop, I'll shoot as far as I can see.

If I'm shooting at a varmint and I know he can't get away (jack rabbit in sparse desert and I'm somewhat elevated), I'd try a shot way out there.

If I'm shooting at big game, then I'm only going to shoot as far as I think I can put the bullet right where I want it. That distance ends when the sights start covering up too much of the target... probably 150 yards or under.

Yep, I shoot them sillywets too, and I'm perfectly comfortable shooting 200 meter rams with a .44 SBH.

As I approach middle age the range I used to be able to hit things with iron sights increases and the range I try to hit things decreases.  Heck, I am doing well at 50 yards now and I can't keep front and rear sights in focus at the same time.  Growing old isn't for sissies!

The range gets shorter as my eyes get older. If the light is bad, it is even closer. I am using a gold bead front with a Williams WGRS rear equipped with a Twilight aperture. I'd probably do o.k. out to 125 yards. There are a lot of trees here.

I've got a Finnish Mosin Nagant M-39 that I'll shoot a 8x12 gong reliably at 300 yrds.  I love the sights on that thing.

The Encore has lousy open sights in my experience... I shoot at maybe 150 with that, if that.

i have done some shooting with peep sights. i,m not very good at longer range with open sights. but i think i could hit a dear at 100 yards with one of my peeps.
i have been spoiled with shooting rifles with scopes from the start. a scope makes hits (easier for me)!
 good luck.

Shooting at 600 yards with a M1 and ammo that was older than me. 17 up and 3 clicks to the left. Shot expert, several years in a row. But, that was a long time ago. Seems to me that the precision ammo, peeps, and TC barrel would be better gear for the job???

Pointing out that the TC rifle is capable, and iron sights can do the job, especially with younger eyes. It's just a mater of practice. I did do 25 years in the Navy, including 462 hours in gunships; was never motivated to shoot em in the shoulder. Also a bow hunter and my definition of "hunt" is hand shaking distance. Now that I'm older and sorta wadded up, I'm having to accept that I need to accept longer ranges and work on marksmanship
