Hi Guys,
We are having a gun show this weekend and I have come across a couple of interesting toys.

One is a Buff Classic rechambered to 45-120 (!!) It looks to be in great condition but has a cheapo tasco 4x scope, no open sights. It has a price of $300 on it. Is this a decent price? And is anybody interested if I get it and decide I don't want it? To tell the truth, I am a little intimidated by the 45-120 caliber. But I could just sell the barrel and replace it with 45-70..?

The other toy is actually what appears to be a Topper (case hardened and ser# starts with AM). However it has a 20 guage barrel with open sites and a full length 45 rifled barrel sleeved inside it. It looks great, locks up solid and is cut off at about 20". Guy is asking $250. Any comments from anybody about this one? It looks very cool and the short barrel makes for a quick handling rifle. Apparently it was created to hunt elk at short range... so the guy says.

I am now home from the show and will be going back at 8am MT tomorrow. So I only have tonight to contemplate bringing one or both of these home.

Please do not ask me to tell more about these guns, I have given all I can remember here and can't go back for more until tomorrow. (I don't know the ser # of the BC - I forgot to look!)

Thanks Kerry, but I already have a 45-120 BC!!!! :D $300 is a good price if it is a good rechamber....I paid $318 for my BC + $135 for the rechamber. If it was done by hand, it may not be a quality job. I shoot 400-500gr bullets using mild loads of XMP5744, shoots very accurate with the Williams FP rear sight.

Is it just me, or does everyone get excited when they see an H&R BC :-D Man, I love these things, maybe a .38/55 to follow or even another BC rechambered to the .45/120 :D Jack.

Dang those cartridges look long and scary!! I sure do like the idea of a mild load - for sure dude!! :shock:

In any case, thanks for the info and your own experience. I will talk to the guy tomorrow and see what I can find out about the rechamber.

And yah Slayer, they are an impressive looking piece... never actually thought I'd be seriously considering one though.. but looking at (and fondling) this one obviously caused a shift in my framework!

And tomorrow is mother's day, maybe my wife will like it!! (even though I just bought her a 20 ga sxs double for Cowboy Action Shooting) :wink:

Before ya get too excited about the 45-120 BC, be forewarned the bra$$ is expensive, over $2 each!! I bought 100 from Mast Technologies, owners of Bell Brass, it was only $188 shipped when I bought it, but they have since raised their price to $207 plus shipping and now are out of it. You can get a 3 die reloading set  for less than $40, though, so the brass is the only expensive part. The brass is no longer made by anyone, so expect it to only go higher. When I bought mine they had 15,000 pieces left.

I am assuming one can shoot 45-70 brass in it as well.. any issue with the short length of the 45-70 and the bullet having to jump so far?

The jump would be well over an inch, I won't try it in mine!!!! Shooting the 357 family, the bullet is partly in the case when it touches the lands, in the 45-120, the bullet would be well out of the 45-70 case before it gets to the lands. Unless someone with more knowledge and experience and who has done it says it's safe, I won't try it.

Yeah, those pics you have showing the difference between the 45-70 and 45-120 are impressive alright.

The guy selling it has a box (20) of loaded rounds he says are part of the deal. 500gr lead, but I don't know the load.

I think I'll risk letting my intuition guide me tomorrow... it has failed me less than 50% of the time.. depending on what is considered failure.

If one is using smokeless powder, is there any advantage of a .45-120 over a .45-70 in a Handi?

Nope, not really!!! :grin: You can load bigger bullets in the 45-120, but you could do the same by throating a 45-70.

OK, quick, that's a new one for me.  What is throating?  I just looked up 'Lands' last night and now I understand that.  
I just sent off my receiver yesterday for a 45-70 barrel, so, here we go.  I am gonna be full of old questions....re-asked, and new ones noone else may have asked yet.  I did buy a Lymanns Manuel a few weeks ago, now I need to start saving my lunch money for a loader.  I know I don't need a press with the Lee hand loader, but a scale and the extra measuring spoons and the primer seat cleaner almost seem like a must.  I read the How To on the Lee site.  Very good.
Anyway, what is throating.

Actually it's a throating reamer, just makes room for the bullet to be seated farther out of the brass. Several fellas here did it to their 45-70s. The throat is the part of the bore just ahead of the chamber where the bullets enters the the rifling. A 500+ grain bullet is over an inch long, when seated to the max overall length, it doesn't leave much room for powder, so having the throat reamed allows for the bullet to be seated less in the case and more out in the deeper throat of the rifle's bore.

For anyone following this thread who likes to know the ends of stories, here i t is.

When I got to the gunshow this morning the guy with the BC wasn't even there, so all the stuff around me buying (or not) this gun simply disappeared from my life as did the peripheral issues around 45-120 brass, what kind of chamber job... etc.

Actually there were a number of tables that turned up empty today (Sunday).

A lot of us figured it was likely to be a slow day anyway because of Mother's day...

And strangely enough very few guys seemed to be buying stuff for their moms or wives at the gunshow! Go figure...:?:

However I did buy my wife a little something, a 20ga Stevens double and would have bought her a single action too if I had found what I wanted.

Oh well...
