What is legal for turkey in your state?
« on: April 27, 2005, 12:52:27 PM »
In Massachusetts we can use shotguns no larger than 10 guage with shot between no. 4 and 6 in size. We are also allowed to use archery and decoys. One strange rule is that we have to have a little green sticker on the gun that says " Be Safe" . Nope I am not kidding with you about that.

We're allowed two bearded turkeys in the spring . no Sunday hunting and the season runs from April 25th to May 21st.

So. What about your state?

Washington state allows shotgun or archery only, 3 bearded turkeys, depending on where you hunt, one of each sub species or 2 merriams in selective counties and one rio or eastern or one of each for a Washington Slam. Season runs Apr 15-May 15, both dates inclusive. Decoys are allowed. Hunt all day if you have the energy!!!!

Forgot to mention the fall season which is permint only and hens can also be taken then.

In Arizona you have to get drawn to go kill a turkey.  The season dates depend on what unit you get drawn for.  My spring hunt starts tomorrow and lasts just under a month.  For the spring hunt you must use a shotgun shooting shot (don't believe we have a pellet size requirement).  In the fall it is open to bow, rifle, pistol, shotgun and any other legal means as described in our states rules.  Sundays are out for you Massachusetts guys? I thought those stupid rules were all gone by now.  Well I'm sure you would be in church anyway.

New Hampshire
anything from 20 through 10 guage.  2, 4, 5 or 6 shot.  Archery equipment allowed for spring hunt.  Decoys legal, but no electronic calling devices or live decoys.  1 bearded turkey for the spring, 1 for the fall (fall is archery ONLY.)  Hunting hours 1/2 hour before sunrise to noon for spring, 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset for the fall.

Ayuh. We haven't been able to hunt on Sunday for at least 100 years. Supposed to be a general day of rest. Also, for turkey in the spring, we can hunt until 12 noon. In the fall, we can hunt all day for the week long season.

Apply for a permit.  There are various spring seasons depending on when you draw for, fall is all the same for everyone.  Spring is one bearded bird(should be more), fall is one also, either sex.  Decoys are allowed however no movable decoys except a wind sock type and no electronic calls.  You can hunt them with a shotgun with shot no larger than #4's and bow and arrow.  Can't shoot em in a tree and hunting hours are 1/2 hour before sun up to 1/2 hour before sundown.

From The New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation web site....

General Information

A turkey permit and one of the following licenses are required while hunting wild turkey: a small game, small/big game, conservation legacy, super sportsman, sportsman, junior hunting, nonresident hunting or nonresident super sportsman license.

You may buy only one turkey permit per year.
If you have filled your bag limit, you may call turkeys for another hunter, but you may not carry a bow or firearm.
If you have taken a turkey which is unfit for consumption, authorized DEC staff may issue a special permit to take another. You will have to surrender the carcass. Call your local wildlife or law enforcement office.

Manner of Taking

You must carry your hunting license and turkey permit while you hunt.
You may hunt with a bow.
You may hunt with a shotgun. The shot must be no larger than #2 and no smaller than #8.
You may use a muzzleloading shotgun.
You may not take a turkey with a rifle or handgun.
You may not hunt with a dog during the spring season. You may hunt with a dog during the fall season.
You may not use bait to hunt turkey.
You may not use an electronic calling or amplifying device to locate or hunt turkeys during the open season.
You may use decoys.

Tagging and Possession

Immediately after taking a wild turkey, you must fill out the appropriate carcass tag in ink, cut out or mark in ink the date and month of kill, and secure it to the carcass. During the Youth Hunt you will need to write "April" on the back of the tag and mark that.
The carcass tag must stay attached to the turkey carcass until it is prepared for eating.
You may give your turkey to another person. You must attach a tag with the following information to the turkey carcass:
your name
your address
your hunting license number
your turkey permit number
his/her name
his/her address
This tag must stay attached to the turkey carcass until it is prepared for eating.

Fall Turkey Season

You may take a bird of either sex.
Bag limits and season dates are given on the next page. In a two- bird area, you may take both birds in one day.
There are two carcass tags for the fall season. Use "statewide" tag in any turkey hunting area. Use "two bird area" tag only in an area with a 2 bird bag limit. Look on the next page for the map showing the two bird bag limit area. Immediately after taking a turkey, you must fill out the carcass tag in ink and attach it to the bird.
If you take a turkey, save one leg from each turkey you take. Return it in the leg envelope you will receive. The legs are used for age and sex information.

Spring Turkey Season

In the spring you may take two bearded birds. You may only take one bird per day.
Immediately after taking a turkey, fill out the carcass tag and attach it to the bird.
You do not need to save and send in turkey legs in the spring. You do need to take careful spur and beard measurements and record them on the spring carcass tag.
Spur measurements: spurs should be measured from the tip of the spur to the base of the spur, where it emerges from the scaly part of the leg. Measure to the nearest 1/4 inch. Do not measure to the forward edge of the leg, only to the base of the spur.
Beard Measurements: beards should be measured from the tip of the beard to the base, where it emerges from the skin. Butt the end of your ruler against the base of the beard and extend the beard along the body of the ruler. Measure to the nearest 1/4 inch.
