For what I'll pay for a Encore...I can have any Handi fully customized the way I want it...and it will most likely out shoot it...

Handi or Encore

I can tell you I seen a couple of Encore at the range and from what I seen them do at the 100 yard target ,was average ,the price of them are there, the Handi only set me back $170.00 compared to a Encore over $500.00 mark, but then I remember you can buy a new Remington BDL for $129.00 when I started hunting many moons ago.

After having two custom rifles made which cost a great deal more than my handi rifle all I can say is these rifles shoot with a good setup. My .243 shoots less than a 1" group out of the box. I will work on getting it tighter  :-) . I am sure the encore shoots great as well. bottom line is do you need to spend a lot of money to have a rifle thats shoots well? certainly not

As far as I'm concerned...the only reason the Encores do as good as they do...being able to switch barels easily and the caliber selection...one of these days...the folks in charge at Marlin will realize this simple little fact...

I have both, an Encore and a Handi on 30-06.  The Handi shoots rings around the Encore.  The Encore is the first thing Thompson Center has ever made that I don't like.  Just don't feel right.  Doesn't shoot like I want it to.  No good beyond 150 to 200 yards.  But I do have to say the Muzzleloader is very good.  I shoot right in there with my partner who uses a Knight Disk.  The 150gr charges that we use is very comforting when hunting something that could turn and eat you.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I like Contenders. So far I am not impressed with my .243 handi rifle. I may have scope problems or hold problems, but the thing shoots 6" groups (with a couple of shots sometimes going in nearly one hole). My .223 Contender (pistol) shoots 3/8" if I am doing my part. I am still working on the handi rifle cause I like the idea of a cheap interchangable barrel rifle. Bedding the scope and adding rubber to the forend did not help. I am going to try different bullet weights. I have been shooting 75s with Varget. I will withhold judgement for a while.

Mike,

Try taking the rubber out and using something solid instead.  I use 6mmX8mm (1/4"X5/16") flat washers between the barrel lug and the forearm screw to get my barrel to float.  It also doesn't hurt to use a 1/4"X20 screw that's 3/4" long to hold the forearm on.  I use a straight slot screw that I snug down and then back up until the screw slot is parallel  to the barrel.  That allows me to return the screw to that position when I change barrels.
