Is there a hunting/carry pistol out there?

I am looking for a pistol to carry in the woods for grizzly protection, but I also want to be able to hunt with it.  Does such a beast exist?  Right now I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in .45 Colt which is a great pistol, but not the lightest thing in the world to lug around.  What are your suggestions on makes and models?

Ruger now makes a concealed carry revolver in .454 and .480 -- which is smaller and more powerful than the gun that you now have.

And since you are already familiar with the Ruger products, in addition to the concealed carry big bores they have introduced you may wish to look at the Vaquero line.  HTH.  Mikey.

I have no experience with this calibre but I have heard that a 10mm can be a formidable cartridge in the woods...Of course it is all hearsay.  Does anyone else have an opinion on the 10mm?

The only thing you need to be concerned with is min. barrel length required for hunting.  :D

A 10mm (I own a pair of 1006's) approaches the effectiveness of a .41magnum -- more than sufficient against two legged creatures but not something that would give me much comfort against a grizzly.

I just bought a Taurus 444 Multi.  It's a 6 shot 44 mag on a Raging Bull frame w/ a 4" barrel.  Only it's made of Titanium and only weighs 28 oz.  Smith makes a light weight 44 mag as well, but it's $300 more.   I'm taking it on my bow hunt to CO in a few days.  Only for black bear and mtn lion protection,   I don't know if you would need more for grizzly or not.  It's not fun to shoot heavy loads, but not bad considering it's purpose.  It's less than 1/2 the weight of my 6 1/2" barreled 44.  They also make it in a 2 1/4" barreled gun, but I went with the 4".  The little I shot it, it was plenty accurate enough for close range hunting.

You want it all in one. Something lighter than the grand 45 Auto and yet able to disable a bear! You are a man after my own dream! Well, consider the 4" Titanium S/W they came out with. Light light light and a real blaster. The one I had blew up in my hand (call Murphy's @ 520 881 7074, ask for the owner, Brian) while shooting factory ammo in 240 gr SPs) I returned the gun and decided to get a Colt Elite Python instead. But that gun was accurate and not bad in the recoil department. I just sort of lost confidence in really light handguns made out of Titanium. Brian will remember me. Just say that I am the chaplain mobilized in the Army away from my home in Sierra Vista and he will know. But back to your request for an accurate and lightweight carry with enough oomph to save you from a bear attack. I would suggest the very model that blew up in my hand. Or, I'd consider in light carry something like a .357 revolver or just take the blows and realize only a heavy gun in longer barrel length like a Super Blackhawk in 44 Mag with 7 1/2 barrel is the best. Me? I'd be in the woods and mountains with a CZ 75 from 1981 holding 16 rounds. A bit heavy. A bit under powered in 9mm Hardball, but I'll be aiming for the bear's open mouth and dumping as many of those FMJs that I can shoot (up to 16) for that kind of encounter. That's because I am carrying it. On my hip. A light side arm for the unexpected. For hunting in a handgun it would be the Super Blackhawk. But I would be carrying a rifle for serious hunting anyway.

:cb2: I'd go with a .44 Mountain Gun, or 3" Trail Boss. I carry a 4" Anaconda on occasion, but that sucker is heavy. On the other hand, the weight helps shooting a short .44 mag. I use a Uncle Mike's shoulder rig with it most of the time. You could go with a 329PD. Very light and if you were in a life threatening situation I'd bet you wouldn't even notice the recoil with the heart pumping so hard!

Thanks for all the replies and good ideas!  Actually, I already have both a shoulder holster and a Bandito for my Super Blackhawk, but trust me you know if you are wearing it!
  Does anyone make a light, double-action, .45 Colt that can stand up to loads of a 300gr. slug at around 1000fps?
