Docs Want Kitchen Knives Banned
« on: May 30, 2005, 10:13:03 AM »
The following is from Fox News, Monday, 30 May.

There is a menace lurking in British homes — the common kitchen knife.

Citing a rash of stabbings across Britain, three physicians wrote in a British Medical Journal article published Friday that the large pointed knife beloved by chefs both professional and amateur was needlessly deadly and should be replaced by safer, blunter counterparts.

"The long pointed kitchen knife is an easily available, potentially lethal weapon, particularly in the domestic setting," wrote lead author Dr. Emma Hern of West Middlesex University Hospital (search) in London.

Short knives, Hern and her colleagues Drs. Will Glazebrook and Mike Beckett wrote, generally caused only superficial wounds, but long pointed blades slip into human flesh in a way akin to "cutting into a ripe melon."

The doctors proposed a simple solution — outlawing pointed choppers and slicers.

"Government action to ban the sale of such knives," they wrote, "would drastically reduce their availability over the course of a few years."

Reaction from professional chefs in Britain was less than enthusiastic.

"Kitchen knives are designed for a purpose," the head of the Edinburgh, Scotland, Restaurateurs Association told The Scotsman newspaper. "It would be like asking a surgeon to perform an operation with a bread knife instead of a scalpel."

In America, where deadly weapons tend to be more sophisticated, leading authorities thought the proposed British ban was cute.

"Are they going to have everybody using plastic knives and forks and spoons in their own homes, like they do in airlines?" Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association (search), asked The New York Times.

"Can sharp stick control be far behind?" wondered LaPierre's erstwhile opponent, Peter Hamm of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (search).

New York celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, not known for mincing words, was both blunt and sharp-tongued.

"This is yet another sign of the coming apocalypse," he told the Times. "Where there is no risk, there is no pleasure."

I would bet that if they banned surgical scapels we could probably save tens of thousands of lives.  C'mon doc, heal thyself first.  Mikey.

I'm with Mikey on this one.

Passing stupid and useless laws causes stress and stress causes poor health, heart problems, and ulcers. So lets ban any law that does not allow the use of commonsense and morality. It will make us all healthier.

I would be willing to bet that more people die hoorible deaths in Britain from smoking related illness, than all of the violent crimes, traffic accidents and or any other accidental deaths  ALL COMBINED.  Get Real!

In a world wide study, Doctors cause more deaths than all the guns, knives and pointed sticks, Baseball bats and all other objects put together.

Let's not punish the nefarious element that would use the knife in a criminal act, that may hurt someones feelings...

Instead let's ban an inanimate tool, Yeah that will definately reduce crime..

The next thing to ban would have to be bath tubs.. because of how many people drown in those deadly things... Oh.. They look so innocent there in the bathroom BUT they are just waiting for some poor soul to fill them with that deadly substance called... H2O and then get in it ON PURPOSE    Only to flail about heplessly until...  its to late...
Quick someone must save all those people from theirselves....
There must be a ban on bath tubs filled with that mennacing substance H2O
And And what about baseball bats, Trains , planes , aoutomobiles, jarts, plastic horseshoes, cows and horses and , and
GOOD GREIF what a mess this world is coming to

There are such bad firearm restrictions in Britain...they had to resort back to using sharp pointed objects again...just like in medievial times.  After all...it IS a ver strong part of the British Heritage...in thier blood.  They should just give them back thier gun rights and let them kill each other efficiently and respectably.  Knives and swords are a really messy way to go.  This being said...I keep a very sharp Samuri sword hanging next to my bed.  If someone were to try breaking in here at night, I would prefer to shop off a hand as they come through the window.  I think it sends a better message than using a gun.  It is up-close-and-personal.  I think most people would prefer to be shot dead than to be hacked up with a sharp knife or sword.

Lets stop dancing around about this and go right to the heart of the matter.... lets ban thumbs. This appendage which helps us as humans do the tasks we do well also contributes to the major forms of homicide, ie guns, knives, autos, yellow journalism, etc. If we did not have thumbs then we can be the sheep the antis want us to be. For sheep, my dear friends do not have thumbs and also do not have a say in their own lives.

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE PROBLEM COMES FROM THE DOCS NOT WANTING TO GET THERE HANDS DIRTY. I WORK IN A ER IN DETROIT MICHIGAN. I SEE ALL KINDS OF THINGS. PEOPLE HAVE TO REALIZE THAT IF SOME ONE WANTS TO HARM ANOTHER OR KILL THEM THEY WILL USE WHAT EVER METHOD. NO REVERSE THIS. WHAT IF SOME ONE BREAKS INTO YOUR HOME AND THE ONLY THING YOU CAN GET TO QUICK WOULD BE A KNIFE. YOU STILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF AND YOUR PROPERTY. THIS IS JUST STUPID. THEY WANT TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE GOOD PEOPLE AND NOT THE BAD. IF YOU ARE A BAD PERSON THAN YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU NEED NO MATTER WHAT THE COST. AS FOR THE GOOD PEOPLE WE WILL GET WHAT WE NEED AND JUMP THROUGH THE HOOPS TO DO IT.

If they think kitchen knives are deadly then they would get a hoot out of my 17” blade Arkansas Toothpick or my 16” blade, 39 oz. Bowie knife.   :-D  :-D   Lawdog
