I have noticed that you use two rifles (except for working) am I correct that they are a 30-06 and 375h&h. If you dont mind me asking what models etc. I figured a guy like you who has seen a lot more than me would have a reason for his choices.

BTW I have 2 m-70 375 stainless classic and m-70 30-06 stainless classic w/boss and of course my anaconda (45 colt)

Your correct, I'm not a gun collector I'm a hunter. So my firearms are limited to what I have lots of time use. My guns are ugly by most peoples standards as well. The Hunting rifles and the 44 mag revolver are all stainless with synthetic stocks( Pacific Research "Rimrock" stocks)

I have a 30/06 and a 375HH Model70 win Both have identical trigger pull and trajectory It's a no brainer to pick one up and know where they hit. Each one has a leupold Scope with a Custom made German 4A reticle (premier reticles). The only difference is that the 375HH has a 24" barrel and the 30/06 a 22" barrel

I like the Model 70's so well when I found a Ruger SS .22 rimfire rifle with the identical safety configuration I bought it as well. This has been a great trainer for the wife and daughter to learn on. It's a bolt action with a 3 position safety. Although it's not a winchester, it's a perfect trainer for the winchester rifles.

Finally I have a blued absolutely beautiful walnut custom made 458 Lott with a Model70 action. It has a one piece solid machined non-adjustable rear sight. John and I designed this sight to be 100% failsafe. It was made to match the loads I use in this gun, so adjustment was not needed. It shoot's 450 grain Barns X bullets at 2350fps and is zeroed for 150 yards making it 1" high at 75 yards. It's a powerful and decisive cartridge. I have never recovered a single bullet from this gun! Every one has gone clean through every animal, sometimes with as much as 2" exits.

I carry the 458 Lott for my work, I don't consider it a Hunting rifle but it could hunt if needed. The trigger is good but set higher then I would typically use on a hunting rifle. Reason being you don't want a hair trigger or a light trigger on a gun when your under high stress and panic. The usual use of this kind of gun is at close range under stress anyway.

The stock is laminated with 1/2" thick side pieces so that from either side it does not appear laminated. You have to look straight down on the gun from the top to see the laminations. It's also been fitted and carved to match a fine double rifle or shotgun. The stock is not like a factory stock made for a scope. It looks like a shotgun stock. Recoil is significant but manageable. I'm not a big guy, 5'10" and 175 pounds. I can shoot it 20-30 times plinking and practice shooting with no problem. With a "past magnum recoil shield" or a heavy coat it's no problem at all. While hunting in Africa I usually have only a shirt on and it's not a problem. However you don't feel recoil or hear gunshots when under pressure or stress.

I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I have recently aqquired the 375 and I dont think the stainless guns are ugly ( the melted plastic bag stocks leave a little to be desired). Do both of your hunting rifle have the same optics mounts etc.. I read this idea in one of your other posts and thats what made me pull the trigger, so to speak, on the 375. Now I need to get them to feel alike.

I noticed that when you are not in africa you reside not to far from me here in north Idaho. I guess those of us from the NW sometimes will take fuction over apparent beauty. When you really think about it though when your done for the day, on a wet hunt (we have a few of those here) do you want to wipe everything dry and warm up, or take out the oil, take everthing apart, wipe it all down, put it all back together, and then if you can still feel your fingers have a cup of coffee (all in a 1976 13' kit trailer).

I am far from old, but I like to think that I have listened to the "been there done that crowd". I have found reading your posts that I like the way you think about hunting in general. My boy is 10 going on eleven and I hope that for his 16th b-day we can go hunting with you.

My rings and mounts are different on the two rifles. The 375HH has Warne QD rings because I have open sights on that rifle. It was my guiding rifle in Alaska for most of my career there. I always wanted the open sights as a quick and easy backup. I also practice shooting with them frequently. It's how I came to really like the Warne QD rings. Each time I would remove and replace the scope the Zero with the scope was still perfect.

My rings on the 30/06 are not QD for several reasons. First I have no open sights, second I made this rifle as light as possible and wanted some trim rings that were the strongest toughest rings possible. There is only one set made that meets that requirement. Leupold Dual Dovetails. No stronger mounting system can be built by man. They also make very low mounts so my scope is nearly touching the barrel. This puts the cheek to stock fit perfectly tight to get you eye allignment to the crosshairs quickly and effortlessly on target.

I have tried several sets of rings and feel these are the best I have usd for the intended purpose. For QD warne and tally are excellent. Tally rings are Kimber QD "copies" and very expensive. Warne bought Kimber so you can see thay are identical. Kimber was the original inventer of these rings.

The Dual Dove tail with lock-tighted bases are the best of all ridged mounts period. There is just nothing better end of story! Installation is a bit more complex then it appears. The rings must be perfectly alligned when installed or you can damage the scope tube when they are clamped down on the tube. I have done this twice in my life! Fortunately I only use Leupold scopes and they were repaired free and I was back in business in a week both times. Once properly installed the scope, mounts and reciever seem to have a molecular bond and become one piece!

I haven't been to Africa and probably won't for a while. I am a little curious, if I went... I've got a 375 Win 70 and a 338 Win 70. The 338 is being rebarrelled from 7 mag. I shoot a lot of birds and I have a 101 O/U in 12 g. I saw that Remington has some awesome new slug loads. The shot gun is fitted to me and has a fiberoptic sight. I'd like to do some bird shooting when I go, would some slugs just in case be good?

I share Jim's views on the dual dove tail ring mount set up. But I hate with a passion the other version of it that has the windage adjustable rear ring. That to me is the weakest and poorest choice available for mounting a scope.

In mounting the dual dovetail rings you need the right equipment. I have the two pointed alignment bars and also lap my rings when finished before putting it all together. As Jim says no tougher combination is available once it is mounted correctly in place. BUT if not done correctly the scope will go back as it will break.
