Firing Pin Alignment
« on: May 10, 2005, 02:15:48 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with the firing pin not hitting the center of the primer and does this effect accuracy?

I sent a 270 back to the factory since the only thing I could get was minute of barn side accuracy.  They did some work along with a trigger job and fitted it for a 3006 Ultra Comp.

Anyway, they did not send any documentation as to was wrong and what they did to fix the problem. I did mention it to them about the center alignment, but examiningg the spent cartridges today they hit in the same place as before.

The best group for 3 rounds was about 3inches, 5 rounds about 4 1/2 and 6 rounds about 6.

therefore, can this be the worm that is effecting accuracy?

Rick, I just looked at a bunch of spent brass from several calibers and they are all off center a little, some more than others. All of mine shoot great.....is the .270 the barrel that's a problem or the UltraComp? Both of my .270s shoot the 130gr rem core-lokts in less than 1½" at 100yds, but  that's the only factory round I've shot in them. I shoot handloads in my 30-06 UltraComp using 200gr Nosler partitions and reloader 22 which shoots less that ½moa 3 shot groups. Mac shot the winchester supremes in it for 1" groups, IIRC.

It is the 270.  I have not tried the 06 yet since I just recieved them recently.  Tonight I pulled the 270 barrel off and will experimrnt with the 06.

Do you have any suggestions for factory ammo for the 06 to try?

Here's Mac's latest report on the 30-06 UltraComp using the new Federal Fusion 150gr ammo....It's available at www.wholesalehunter.com and http://www.outdoormarksman.com/

The firing pin barely catch's the edge of the primer on my 44 mag barrel, and its not the greatest at 100 yds. The entire barrel is off to 1 side of the reciever, and I have'nt tried to fix it yet. Digger

3006 ultra comp

Just got back ftom the  and here is my report on the 3006 Ultra Comp.

The first thing I noticed was how little of recoil was felt much less than the standard 270.  The second was the amount of jump, which was minimal and finaly, the noise.  The noise level was not as loud as what I would have expected with a ported barrel.

Accuracy was not so good. I shot factory 165 Winchester soft points where groups were from 2 to 4 inches.  Remember, this is the same reciever used with the 270 that I have been having so much trouble with.

I am trying to be patient with this gun, but my patience is wearing thin.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would definitely try more than one type of ammo, I've had to buy 6 or 7 different types to find one that shot good in my .243 and .25-06 ultras, ya just gotta find what it likes. The Fusion ammo would be the first thing I would try since Mac had great accuracy with it in the same barrel you have, it just doesn't get any better than this! The Fusion ammo is available at the links above....A couple of basics to remember.....the transfer bar safety mechanism requires that you pull the trigger to the rear completely at the break and not release it, just follow thru with the squeeze. Place the forward rest just ahead of the trigger guard.....keep at it!

This is the first and only ammo I've shot through my syn 30-06, your rifle might like it too. Give it a shot :-)

My sb2 firing pin strikes the primers slightly higher than center. I put a witness mark on all my cases as I neck size, and I've noticed that the pin strikes high in reference to my mark. It doesn't seem to cause any problems for me.
