Target Source and .223
« on: May 15, 2005, 03:40:25 PM »
Good day,

I am trying to get into the metal silhouette sport and have a few questions.

The first is where is some sources do purchase a set of small bore metal silhouette targets. I live in BC, canada so the closer to me the cheaper the shipping.

Also how do cast iron targets measure up against steel? Do they break to much?

Also which target can you use a .223 with? What scale range etc.

Thank you very much for the help.

Target Source and .223

I don't think there is a sanctioned silhouette game that permits .223. The high velocity pock-marks even the hardened steel targets. Minimum caliber for highpower silhouette is 6 mm.
Someone will post the website for the cast iron 1/5 scale smallbore targets we all use now. They're a good product. Most breakage in the past came from the ram's horns and the chicken, where the velocity is highest. The leg would break and knock the animal off its base. The new one is reinforced at the leg and we've had no problems whatever. (Help me here, guys. Aren't these Ray Schaefer's targets? I've not personally bought any but our club has bought several sets.)

Yep, .223 currently not permitted, and 6mm minimum caliber.  Ray Schafer cast targets are fine.  The old ones from EMI(?) have breakage problems on the chickens and rams.  Chickens would break off at the foot, and rams would either have the horns or nose shot off.  Why use the body when a head shot is more challenging  :-D .  Our average on chickens is 1.8, and 0.5 ram breaking per match.  Once we switched to the Ray Schafer targets, no breakage.  On Ray's chickens the leg cross section has been increased slightly to better withstand the bullet energy.  We also have some welded SB targets, but welds crack after a while and need repair.
