barrel swapping
« on: May 18, 2005, 06:50:38 AM »
OK, I'm a newbie here but not new to guns.  Before I ask my question I am fully aware that the firing pin strikes in different places on a rimfire vs. a centerfire.  That said...

Will a rimfire barrel mount to a centerfire frame?

I have an idea that I'd like to try but don't have rimfire barrel to try.

If you must know what I want to know for you can email me and I'll share my idea.  It's not a secret so much as I don't want someone to try it and have bad results.

Welcome aboard!  :D  It may or may not fit, just depends. Same applies to the fitting of any barrel to a different frame......chances are it will, but it may still need some adjustment for optimum fit. Even among centefire barrels and SB2 frames, I have have some that aren't even close to fitting. As far as the design of the rimfire barrels, they have the same size barrel, underlug, and forend stud as the centerfire/shotgun barrels.

Quickdtoo, Great!  That's the answer I wanted to hear.  Now question #2.  If I did said barrel swap where in the chamber would the fireing pin hit.  IE is the chamber of the rimfire centered in the same place on the barrel as the centerfire?  I believe that the Rossi's accompolished their switch barrels by drilling the boar out of line so that the firing pin struck the rim instead of the center.

Mike, it will hit in the middle of the rimfire head, maybe slightly off center, but not enough to hit the rim where the priming is. The rimfire chambers are centered in the barrel on all models except the Versa pack rimfire barrel's chamber which is offset. The pic below is an SB2 centerfire pin strike on a 17hmr case head along with rimfire pin strike. The lockup on this barrel wasn't bad, but still needed work, so the strike was just a little lower than center.

WOOO HOOO!!! :-D   That's the answer I wanted to hear!  Now I need to find me  .17HMR or HM2 barrel to play with.  Probably end up buying the whole gun unless someone has one they don't want.  Now I got my next project!  I'll let you know what it is if it works.

I've only been here awhile but I sure like what I've seen of this forum already.

Thanks for that info.
