I have used handguns to hunt whitetail deer for the past four years. Double action revolvers were the weapon of choice.

I am interested in a contender in 30-30. I found one for sale for what seemed like a great price. The thing is, the only way to cock the hammer is to break the action open, then the hammer will catch. I asked if this was right, and was told thats how the contenders work. Is this true? It seems like a funny way to engineer a hunting gun. The way I understand the operation is, every time the hammer is dropped the action must be opened to reset the sear. Then the hammer will catch and be ready to fire again.

Any help would be appreciated.

As I understand it the G2 is capable of "recocking" the rest of us w/ old ones must not cock till ready to fire, or we must open -n- close to "recock"..  I have not found this to be a problem, but at times it can be an annoyance.  Marty

There is the other way to let down the hammer wthout the need to pull the triger. You will want to practice a few times with an unloaded firearm.
When you have cocked the Contender and need to let the hammer back  down pull back on the triger guard part way as if to open the action. It releases the hammer and you don't need to open action completely to recock. Works just like pulling the triger.  Just be sure you have control of triger as it will drop when you pull back the triger guard. Just one of those things jthey don't tell you about. :D

Longwalker, don't do things the hard way. All you have to do is hold the bbl. closed and pull back on the trigger guard, then cock the hammer. At most you only have to barely crack open the bbl. while doing this. Practice it and see.   Pat

I have a 10" and 14" 30-30 barrel both are good shooters.The 10" has iron sights the 14" has scope.The 10" is real handy in the thick stuff.
