280 ammo?
« on: January 11, 2005, 04:10:27 PM »
I want to change my ammo for next deer season. I used to use winchester ammo with ballistic silvertips. I want to use Federal ammo with a 150 grain Nosler Partition bullet, or a Remington 140 grain accutip (new for this year). The shots can be from a few steps away to 400 yards. Which one would be better for deer and maybe bear?

The Nosler partition would definately work for deer and bear.  On deer only(no bear experience) the 140gr. Remington Core-lokts will kill any deer you shoot properly with.  I think that Winchester loads the 140gr. failsafe too if you are wanting a tough bullet for bears.  Good luck.

The only thing I fire from my .280 is either Ballistic Tips or Partitions. The last two deer I shot were with partitions, and neither one of them went any where. All fell over in their tracks.

I'm going to try Hornady's 139 gr. SST Light Mag. ammo in my 280 Rem. This ammo seems pretty hot and everyone I've talked to that used it loves it. Will see!

Those should work very well. I am a fan of the Nosler Ballistic tips.
shot placement is everything.

Well said, James!

I too like the Ballistic Tips - especially heavy for caliber versions that provide more penetration.
