Split barrel on my Springfield Mil-Spec

I was shooting today with some Speer Lawman ammo and the gun jammed. We had to pry the gun open and then disassembled the gun. We found the barrel split on 2 sides, almost the full length of the barrel.

I know there was not a squib load, because I was sighting in a red-dot and was shooting one shot and then making adjustments. All my shots were accounted for on paper. I don't know what happened, but I already call Springfield Armory and they told me to ship it to them with a letter explaining what happened.

I will keep you all posted on what they find and if they will repair the gun.

It sounds like the same sort of thing that was happening with the Sako barrels...bad billets of steele. :eek:

I don't think it was the ammo either. I inspected the stuck case and found no abnormalities. The case was not stuck, but the barrel was not letting it come out. The primer was not flattened. I did get some powder spray to the face though. But I am also glad not more happened. Hearing protection and eye protection were used and I always recommend other use them.  :D

Redhawk1- glad you didn't get busted up when that barrel went.  That's one Mil-Spec that goes right back to the factory.  

The Speer Lawman rounds are excellent quality - maybe it was a bad batch of barrel steel with your barrel and I'm sorry to hear about it.  However, all that being said I'm glad it happened somewhere where you could do something about it rather than being forced to use a 1911 as a club.  JMO.  Mikey.

A friend I shoot IDPA with just got his gun back from Springfield. The barrel split at the muzzle. He had to send the whole gun back for repair. It was his primary carry gun, so he missed it dearly!

I sent the whole gun in also. I also told them I did not want them to remove the custom parts I installed in the frame.  This is my shooting gun. I have about 4 other carry guns so I don't mind the wait.  :D
