405gr bullets w/ H335 in .45-70

Anyone using H335 w/ 405gr lead bullets in a .45-70 Handi?  I would like to get around 1500fps, so any help is appreciated!

I can find very little data using H335 in the 45-70. I have all the manals. 49.0 grains of Varget will yield 1591 FPS as a starting load and 55.0 grains Max for 1772. Also IMR 4198 and H322 will work well. These loads are from the new Lyman Manual. This is the BIBLE for cast bullets and has good loads for jacketed bullets as well.

This is from Hodgdon #26...For Modern Rifles Designed For High Pressure Loads Only.  The test barrel length was 22"


Bullet          Powder        Start Load                                  Max Load

385-405gr     H335      54.0gr   1666fps                        58gr  1780fps

I have that load in my Hodgdon manual but the starting load is hotter than you wanted to go. H335 is not a good powder for the 45-70. For milder loads the 5744 is about the best. IMO 3031 is good and RE-7 and the others I listed above. 13.5 grains of Unique with a Large rifle Mag primer and the 405 cast bullet is a good mild load but onlt yields about 1100-1150 fps.

I've used the 335 for mild to medium loads under the 405 grain bullets and I guess they were ok but seemed to have pretty large sd's for me.  I've found 4895 and 3031 to be better choices and am getting ready to play with Benchmark a bit.

I have used 42 grains of RE-7 with the 405 grain Jacketed Bullet. I have not used it yet with cast bullets.
