How do you trim your cases?

What's  the best way to trim cases to length before reloading?  What tools would you recommend?

There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews out there on both tools and technique.  Any help would be appreciated.

I've used both the Lyman trimmer and the Lee trimmer, the Lee is my favorite....I attach my cordless screwdriver to it, after the trimming, I use the Lee deburring and champfering tool on the case mouth with the case still in the lock stud. The Lyman trimmer works good but is a pain to set up unless you have a dedicated case of each caliber for setup.

I also use the Lee trimmer but  by hand ,i have been wanting to try the rcbs trim die which all you do is file it down seems rather easy

I have a Hornady trimmer, because I am "collet challenged".



Never could get the hang of them. Hornady uses a shellholder to clamp the case.

Coincidentally, until about a week ago, I only had a Hornady/Pacific trimmer like the one in the picture above.   But I bought an RCBS Trim Pro off a friend, and it works like a champ.   The adjustability of the thing, and the easy way it aligns cases with those shell plates is just fantastic for quick, accurate trimming of cases.    It beats the Hornady entirely.....leaving no comparison to speak of.  

I also use the Trim Pro 3-Way cutter he gave me with the setup for the .30 caliber.    It might be a little bit of a challenge for some to set up, but it cuts down a lot on the work with the chamfering tool.     I need only a quick chamfer on the inside of the case necks to get the results I want.

I like the RCBS tool with the 3-way cutter too.  Trims chamfers and deburrs all in one pass. Also use the quick-set shellplates instead of the collets.  Those collets are a real P.I.T.A. When you're doing thousands of cases it's the ONLY way to go.

Chucked up in a 1/2" drillmotor, 2 guys working together can really knock 'em out.  One guy sets the cases in the holder, and removes them after they're cut.  The other runs the drillmotor that spins the cutter head.

My partner Craig and I did 1000 223 cases in about 3-1/2 hrs one morning.  The 3-way cutter is a bit spendy, but I've got several CF 22's to prep every year so it was a must-have for me.

Drill press.

Sometimes use the Lee handtool and sometimes chuck a Forster trimmer in it. If you use the Lee, set your quill stop, because the pin will drill into the table.

I use the lee case trimmer, and chamfer tool.  Just hook up the trimmer to a cordless drill, put the trim head in a small vise to hold it, and go to town.   Then use the chamfer tool to remove any burrs.  Simple, easy, and inexpensive.

Lee with chamfer tool here, also.  Have an RCBS trimmer but rarely use it.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help :grin:

I was trying to get a setup that I could use on all my cases.  I was looking at the Lee trimmers but it doesn't look like they offer trimmers for .22 K-Hornet, .204 Ruger and .22 Rem. Jet.

How do you adjust and lock the length settings on the rotory trimmers like the RCBS, Redding, Lyman and Forster trimmers?

use the lee and I chuck the cutter in a drill press and hold the brass I can really crank out the brass with it. than I use the RCBS to deburr that part is kind of slow I'm looking for a better deburr tool.
