30-06 springfield brass
« on: May 15, 2005, 03:20:21 PM »
Question I stop at bass pro today and purchase a bag of new winchester brass for the handi single shot, just last year after I sold my springfield I dump a couple boxes of once fired brass in the trash can, also sold my RCBS dies along with the A3-03.I did purchase a new set of RCBS for $23.00 bucks ,not bad my old dies had to be close to 40 years old,I think it was time for a new set.
I had not purchase brass in a long time would like to know if I have to run the brass threw the resizing dies before I reload them .
I don't have my reloading manual here with me but if I remember I did use a mid-range speed of 2400fps using IMR 3031 maybe around 44 grains and 165 grain Hornady interlock SP bullet, been using the loads for years ,never had a deer walk away from this load but was wondering what are some of your favorite powder you guys like for the 06. :D

Some new brass have bent mouths and you have to at least run them past the expander ball to fix that.  Otherwise, I always just load them directly.

I really like IMR 4350, RL 19, and H414.
Psalms 18:34-35 He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. (35) You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, And Your right hand upholds me; And Your gentleness makes me great.

Resizing New Brass

Although it's not required, I always resize new brass before I load it. It fixes the lip irregularities from the brass banging around during shipping and handling and it will insure consistancy after you go through reload to the first loading. I feel this is particularly important if you are going through load development work.

A lot of 30-06s seem to do well with IMR 4350 at 57 grains with 165 grain pellets. Start lower and work up just to be safe. I get a muzzle velocity of 2890 fps with the 165 grain Hornady Interbonds.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

My experience has been pretty much what Val and db have said.  Run new brass through the sizer die to true up the mouth and neck and it ensures that you have consistent shot-to-shot neck tension on all of the bullets.  I then to a light inside and outside chamfer of the case mouth for ease of bullet seating and chambering.  I also like to de-burr the flash holes and mill the primer pockets for consistent ignition.
