« on: December 03, 2005, 03:56:59 PM »
I would like to load up some .410-.20 and .12 gauge blackpowder loads in brass hulls. Where can I get some? Best ones? I will mainly be using the .12 gauge. What do I nead to load them? I will be shooting them out of single shot shotguns. Thank you-Jack.

I really appreciate that. I am very intrigued as I shoot muzzleloading shotguns, so it should be a hoot in doing this. Now I just nead to figure out what all to buy other than the brass-powder-shot as in which wads, etc? I imagine flexible wads because of choke restrictions. Felt wads? What I nead to load them? Jack.

Brass shells from Magtech
« Reply #3 on: February 26, 2006, 01:28:55 PM »
Hi,

I found and just got some full-length Magtech brass, 12 ga. 2 3/4 shells from MidwayUSA; a box of 25 was $12.99.  These use the large pistol primers instead of 209's and I got a box of CCI's.

Now, I also need to find info on available base wads, powders, loads, and whatever else I can learn on loading these.

Tomorrow I intend to contact Magtech and see if they will let me pick their brain a little... I will post back whatever I learn.  I have looked in a couple of reloading manuals but got nothing.  I am also looking at the Cowboy Action Forum but so far nothing there either.

Can someone point me to some web sites with info on loading full-length brass 12 ga. shells?

Appreciate the help guys.

Thanks.

Follow-up
« Reply #5 on: March 02, 2006, 03:58:22 PM »
Thanks rickyp... As a matter of fact I am already using Ballistics Products as a source for some things.  I am in the process of trying to put together what I need to develop a new load; in a couple of months I should have some meaningful info to share.

Now, a follow-up:

I spoke to the folks at Magtech, and others, and did a little research as well and I found some interesting stuff (well, interesting to me, anyway)

There are two types of full-length brass shells for shotguns; extruded and machined.  The extruded ones, which is what the Magtechs are, are made from brass stock that is pressed and formed into shape using dies (more or less).  These have a thin wall and the bottom of the interior floor is below the top of the flash hole of the primer pocket.  These factors allow for a seriously large powder capacity - very useful for the higher volume requirements of some blackpowder loads.  I found no available base-wad equivalence capabilities for these and they require less common oversize (11 ga.) wads and cards, and they use large pistol primers.  They cost about 52 cents each new from MidwayUSA.  The machined ones, as offered by Rocky Mountain Cartridge, are made from brass stock that is turned in a lathe to size and shape.  They have a thicker wall, like a plastic shell... a thick floor, like a plastic shell with a built-in base-wad and, like a plastic shell, they use 209 primers.  They cost about $4.60 each new from Rocky Mountain Cartridge.

So, one "tastes great" and the other is "less filling"... Which one do I prefer?... Actually I like Olympia beer better than Miller but here in Florida it is nearly impossible to get Olympia, so, often I end up drinking Yuengling... go figure.

I just ordered 20 of the machined ones from Rocky Mountain for evaluation and load development.  More info to come... stay tuned.

Does anyone know of a load for high velocity sabot slugs in brass cases?

I have been loading and using BP 12 GA shells for about a year now. My cases are original WW dating from 1950 or so. I prime them with CCI large magnum pistol primers. Rifle primers will not reliably work. The shotgun firing pin doesn't hit them hard enough. I have a shell holder from RCBS and can prime on my press if I want to but, in truth, I usually use a hand tool I bought off of Ebay that dates to 1900. It looks like a nutcracker. Simple and effective. I measure the BP by volume. I found that GOEX 3F at about 110 grains gives an excellent hunting load. I put an over powder wad (11 GA circle Fly) over the powder followed by a 5/8 cushen wad (again, 11 GA circle fly which I lube. I melt SPG and soak the wads in it before using) Then I add a half 5/8 cushen wad followed by 11/4 oz of 71/2 chilled shot. I then top it of with a think over shot card and seal the card in place with a few drops of super glue. The over shot card is about 1/8" from the mouth of the hull.  I have a small tool to press the over shot card down level. I had it turned for me from brass stock.

These loads give me about 1300 fps and pattern well. I've shot 20 rounds at a time without wiping so the lube works. I tried 2F but didn't get the velocity. My guess is that Swiss 11/2F would give beter results.

Great responses!! So I buy the 11ga Circle Fly wads eh? What is another option for putting in/taking out the Primer? I think I am going to switch totally over to 3F powder for all of my muzzleloaders to keep things uniform and I have heard 3F shoots cleaner also. Thanks again-Jack.

A depriming tool can be made from a dowel that fits closely inside the hull. Just drill it in the center, insert a small nail and let it protrude about .125" This, when taped with a mallet, will deprime the cast. To reprime, set the primer on a hardwood block, center the primerpocket over the primer and with another hardwood dowel that fits closely, tap the primer into place. Lee still does it this way in their lee Loader although they use steel base plates and rods.

Brass for .410
« Reply #10 on: April 08, 2006, 06:41:13 PM »
I've seen .444Marlin cases used for .410.   A couple of kids were using them in "Rimfire Wrangler" class at a Cas shoot in Victoria fish & Game, BC.
I've heard that  .303 Brit , or Krag cases can be used after they are staightened, but I've never done it or seen the results.

I have been loading magtech 12 ga. brass hull with black powder loads for quite some time.
I had two issues.
1. My firing pins would not fire a Lg rifle primer so I switched to Lg pistol primers which work just fine.
2. The rim size is a bit smaller and will occationally catch behind the extractor on one of my older hammer guns.

In addition Brass hulls just look good.
