How to tell if receiver is shotgun or Handi? Serial # ?
« on: May 18, 2005, 10:35:47 AM »
Is a 'Handi' receiver marked as such?  Or is it determined by serial # only?  Would a receiver marked NN****** have started out as a rifle or shotgun?

Robert,

It was built in '97, the only way to know for sure is to call or email H&R with the sn to determine what frame it is.  There are some maybe indicators, but nothing reliable to tell for sure which is. If the barrel on it has the last 3 digits of the frame serial number engraved in the left side of the underlug, chances are good that its the original barrel/frame combo.

Thanks Tim.  It does in fact have the last 3 digits on the lug. It is an SB-2 in 243 Bull and has seen some abuse.  It has some ejector problems, and the guy cut the top of the hammer off to install a cheap scope instead of matching it with the right scope and rings.  Hinge pin is well worn....but these are minor things that I can work out with a little T.L.C.
It looks like I have finally taken the plunge and graduated to a single-shot rifle that will swap-out with capable hunting barrels.  A few years back, I started go with Carbine barrels in Contender because of the severe limitations of pistol scopes in dusk/dawn, low light situations.  The other limitations with Contenders of course would be the low-pressure cartridge selection and the 'OVERPRICED' barrels that cost as much as a Complete New Handi.  Also....now I will have something to work with when they release the 7.62x39 accessory barrels.

You can virtually eliminate the failures to eject by polishing the chamber with a bore mop and flitz or JB bore compound....and make sure the chamber is clean and dry before shooting it.

Thanks Tim....I have only used his reloads so far...This afternoon I pulled a bullet and weighed the powder, it was a little on  the hot side....  Primers were flattened...but not too badly.  I think he was trying to make a 22-250 out of it.  The ejector is worn too, I will have to order another one...it pops way out and the bullet slips right past it if I am not being careful.  I am sure that with a new ejector and proper loads it will be fine.

Yup, hot loads and a Handi are not a good combination from my little experience in handloading and from everything I've read of most anyone else's esperiences here.  Numrich and Brownell's has the ejectors as well H&R.

After thinking about what you said, the ejector may not be worn, it is designed to be out of the way when it has been tripped to allow  round to enter the chamber without interference. Remove the barrel from the frame and press the ejector in to the "launch" position. Slide a cartridge into the chamber, the ejector should ride the cartridge body all the way in and snap in front of the rim. A good cleaning of the ejector assembly may be in order. Here's a link to show disassembly and also how to convert it to a spring driven extractor.
