Hunting with an SKS:

It is illegal in the state that I live in, to hunt with a semi automatic rifle that is capable of handling more than five rounds of ammo.  How can I make an SKS legal then, so that it is capable of only 5 rounds?
It it hurts when you do that then don't do that.

They sell 5 round clips for hunting with these guns. That would be your best bet. A search on SKS clips should find some for you. I do not know if you blocked the factory clip to 5 rounds if that would be legal or not. You would have to ask some one in your state.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Making an SKS 5 round limited....
Just as you would plug a shotgun to limit it the the maximum allowable number of shells ,you can limit an SKS to be legal by inserting a small block of wood in the bottom of the clip to limit it to 5 shells.
This requires no modification or new magazine to purchase.
Experimentation with different sizes of wood blocks will let you arrive at the proper size. The wood goes UNDER the follower.

Just cut down a 1' X 2" pine board to fit the mag.. If that legal in
your part of the world. One thing about it we all know a stock
SKS mag will feed great.

If you do this, contact the local game department to make sure that the modification brings you into compliance.  The reason I say that is that they may require the modification to be "permanent."  Personally, I would opt for a commerically manufactured 5 round magazine and make sure that when in the deep woods, I had no other magazine present or even in my truck.

Thats why I stated to check with some one in his state. The best way to go would be get a 5 round mag that way there would be no question  about legality. Jim

You could pick up another orginal mag and measure it for 4 rds w/1 in the chamber makes 5 total and put a bolt horizontally thru the mag as a fixed stop if thats the requirement where you live.  I think some places don't like the detatchable duck bill mags either so that puts the 5rd duckbill mag of of the question but so would the 5rd capacity because you could put a 6th one in the chamber too.  We have to becareful with magazine capacity and not forget the one in the chamber they do add up to 6 if were not careful.                                                     BigBill

One must know his exact limitations is it a 5rd mag or 5rds total capacity in the gun?  I've seen this with 30-30's that hold 6+? or the 444 you can sqeeze in more than 5 too.  Of course they never get caught but we do it not realizing it sometimes too.

I seem to remember a book about hunting in Scandinavia and the author had Norwegian authorities put a couple of dents in his magazine to make it hold no more than the legal number of rounds.  It would be easy to do on an SKS, and you could get another magazine for when you wanted to fill her up.

Yep!!! That would be the only way. Its not like were talking big money, or a lot of install time.
