Nosler and Hornady 44 Mag. bullets
« on: May 23, 2005, 05:39:33 AM »
I've been working up loads for my 44s using the 250 grain Nosler Partition HG and the 265 grain Hornady FP.  I've never used either on game and I am wondering if anyone out there has an opinion on either of them as to their field performance.  I'm especially interested in any real world comparisons folks can make on the two.

Thanks.

A couple of years ago I shot a little blacktail spork (spike by fork) with the 44-250 Nosler Partition Handgun. It was about a 60-70 yard shot offhand. I hit him even with the backside of the front shoulder right on the underside of the spine. Broke a rib on the way in, hit the bottom side of the spine then turned 45 degrees down and forward and left through the offside shoulder. I don't know why it took the hard turn when it hit the spine, but it did drop him right there.
It might have sheared off a petal and began to tumble, who knows? I did not recover the bullet but the little buck did not take a step.
I would certainly use this bullet again for deer but I would go to a heavy hard cast if I were going to hunt anything larger. (elk) It would be a much better bullet if they bumped it up to 300 gr by adding another 50gr to the rear (behind the partition) of the bullet.

Good luck, shoot well, shoot often, and have fun.

I`ve used the Hornady 240 gners on deer. I don`t like them from a handgun because they won`t open like I`d like them to. The partions are a waist of money because you`ll never gat velosities from a handgun to need a partion bullet. I`ve been loading deer loads for myself and 3 other hunters for years and the best bullet I`ve found for deer is the Serria 240 gn. JHC bullet. Best combo of accuracy and terminal preformance. The Hornady are just as accurate, but they often fail to open at handgun velosities. The Rem. bullets have excellant termanal preformance but are not quite as accurate, ect, with the rest of the bullets. If yoyr going to shoot hog use the Hornady`s, but for deer the Serrias can`t be beat.
