Every since I was a young teen I have had a thing for Quarter Bores.  My first was a .257 Roberts that I got talked into trading it off but that was what fueled the desire for another.  Since then I have “collected” Quarter Bores in bolt action rifles(even a couple of lever actions(.25-20, .25-35 & .25-3000) have found their way to my home).  Now I have bolt action rifles in .25 Rem., .250-3000 Savage, .257 Roberts(2 of them), .25-06 Rem.(3 of them), .257 Weatherby Magnum.  The one Quarter Bore that I have had trouble finding is the .256 Winchester.  Finding an original factory rifle chambered for the .256 Win. isn’t easy.  Lawdog

Tough to find.  Down to 6 just now.  25-20, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 256 Hawkeye and 25-20 and 257TCU Contenders.  Wished I had my 250 Savage Ruger 77 back.

I don't know Lawdog. My wife says I'm a 1/4 boar on a good day and a big fat pig the rest of the time.

I've got the 25-20, 257 Roberts and 25-06.  I like plinking with the 25-20, target shooting and varmint hunting with the Roberts, and hunting bigger game with the 25-06, mostly because I broke the stock on it and it now has a cheapo synthetic stock that is just looking for punishment. I think if I had to go with one I would take the 25-06 without much regret.  The 257 Roberts I have is a Remington Classic and has proven to be the most accurate of the 3 with loads I've developed to date.
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

My only quarter-bore is a Ruger .257 Roberts I picked up used at a gun show a year ago.  Was actually leaving the gun show and heading to Sportsman's Warehouse to buy a Ruger .25-06 when I literally bumped into the seller.

Have fallen hard for the .257 Roberts - its relatively compact yet still packs a wallop.  I use it for varmints now and hope to use it for big game this fall.

i am a .25 fan from way back... i shoot a bunch in Contenders, and in Contender Carbines, and in bolt guns. No levers at the moment, but i am sure one will follow me home sooner or later.

i could get by without half of them, but i like handloading & messing with various calibers & the .25's seem to perform well without beating you to death & have been all-in-all pretty accurate. At the moment i have Contenders &/or carbines in 25/20, 25/35, .256 WinMag, .257 TCU, .25 Classic, and .25 Bullberry. Got bolt guns in .250 Savage, .25-06, and .257 STW.

i squirrel hunt with reduced speed 25/20's, and shoot the STW over wheat fields for deer. For me my various .25's do different jobs, but i enjoy them all. I just bought a .25 "Whisper" (.256 Mag Virgin Valley Barrel, quicktwist, with long throat) that should arrive this week, look forward to playing with that one...

Lawdog, what bolt gun do you shoot in .25 Rem?

Remington Model 30 Express.  Picked it up in 1986 at a pawn shop in Ukiah, California.  Paid $45.00 for it and it's a sweet shooter.  The previous owner had a K4 Weaver scope installed on a side mount.  Rifle and scope were in excellent condition, just covered with dust from being on the rack for so long.  Lawdog

hey Lawdog...here is your chance to increase you wealth...i'll give you a quick $50 for that rifle!! after all you only paid $45, how can you pass that up?  :-D  :-D

congrats on a great find! I always though the .25 Rem might be suitable for a Contender Carbine, it should have about the right case-head size & chamber pressure to fit in there without excess backthrust. what sorta velocities are you getting out of 87 & 100 grainers?

I think I'll keep it.  It found a home in the back of my safe where it sits warm, comfortable and safe from those of the world that would mistreat it.  Beside the shipping costs would eat up any profit I would see from it's sale. :-D

The following is the only two loads I am using for it.

28.3 gr. of H4895 for 2,422 fps. using 100 gr. Barnes TSX bullets(1.20” 5 shot group)
29.2 gr. of H4895 for 2,713 fps. using 87 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips(1.62” 5 shot group)

Both of these loads show no sign of excessive pressure but are both are at maximum according to my manuals, so a good starting point would be 10% under the stated grains used and work up.  A good safety idea for any load you get given to you, even if you know the person personally.  Lawdog

Hello Reloader,

You brought up a good point about your Remington Classic in .257Roberts being quite accurate.  I have 3 Classics now from various years and all are more accurate than I would expect.  I get rather put out by Remington at times, but my criticisms don't extend to the Classic line.  They seem to be very well built with few problems.  I understand Remington is considering discontinuing the Classic line.  That'll be the end of my association with Remington if they do.  Why not just make it a part of the regular production and be done with it?  Gawd but I wish they would hire more gunsmiths and fewer accountants and lawyers, both of whom make lousy rifles.  Best wishes.

RIP Cal you are missed by many.
