I'm looking to build a black powder cannon out of a M2 .50 BMG barrel which has a .510" bore diameter. I was looking at using a .50 cal. minie bullet as a projectile.
Lee Precision has a .50 cal. minie mould that produces bullets that are advertised at being .500" diameter. I have (2) questions:
(1) Would a .500" minie bullet expand out to .510" with out much problem? Not having any experience with them, I really don't know.
and
(2) The M2 .50 BMG barrel has a twist rate of 1-15". I realize that this rate of twist is probably too fast for the minie bullet, however, could there be problems with the bullets flying apart from too much rotational velocity?
I realize this is probably going to be a trial and error situation but I wanted to ask first just to see if I was heading the right direction.
Otherwise, I guess I'll have to shell out some extra money for one of those custom .50 BMG cast bullet moulds.
Thanks.
